Latest Check-Ins

From this point, you can continue the trail to get closer to the dinosaur footprints. there is a first large area to park before starting the descent. the track which then descends towards the tracks is bad, narrow and rocky but it is possible to continue further to get closer to the tracks. at the end of this track you arrive in a house plot where you can park (the owner asked us for 20 bols, we spent the night there). It then only remains 15 minutes on foot to reach the dinosaur tracks.

We slept at 100m SW of this point with à tent. We don't know if it's possible, but we didn't meet any local so we didn't have problem.
The spot is not so flat, but ok for one night, and perfect to camp in the middle of the 2 days "Maragua trail".

Report Check-In

We couldn't see anything resembling a car park so just pulled over on the side of the road. Only one car drove past at night and we saw nobody else. No one asked for money for camping.
We picked up 8 children walking home from school and drove them about 5kms home, crazy to think they walk so far to school and back every day so if you see any locals on your way please stop and give them a lift!
The dinosaur footprints were interesting to see. Met some strange locals along the way, a man walking his cows who tried to charge us 30 pesos to look at the second footprints (after we had already paid 20 and received a ticket at the first footprints), and an old lady who stopped to poke me in the boob and say something to me, I swear she was putting a curse on me or something haha.

We stayed here for one night before the trecking to footprints. Nobody were here. Just came locals Victoria and Carlos. They are friendly. We presented them fruits and some other small things and they looked happy. They live poor and it s clear how difficult to get products there. So if you want you can take smth. for them and get good opportunity to communicate with locals. They wanted to sell us some artesania but we were not interested in it.
By the way we went back to Sucre by the road to Potolo and it was better and faster for us (kombi) than road to Maragua.

This road is totally doable, we made it here with our vw bus :) of course we would not even try in the rainy season.. totally worth it. Amazing hike and we loved the prints. The name of the person in charge is “Seriaco” just in case someone else wants to charge you.. enjoy it!

Report Check-In

Coming from Maragua it is the LOWER way (to the left) that leads to the dinosaur footprints. The way uphill goes to Potolo.
It is a nice walk and if you are not by bike, motorbike, horse or on foot I wouldn't recommend to drive the track. In some parts it is narrow, steep, soft or rocky. When we walked it was obvious that nobody drove there for some time. We don't have to drive everywhere! Enjoy the walk - it is really worth it!

We made it here in our 2WD sprinter. It's a bit steep coming from Sucre, but doable. We picked up several local people, it's a 2 hour walk from Chaunaca to Maragua! We recommend you do the same, it was a great experience (and we don't speak great Spanish).

We got charged 10BOL pp before the town entrance (for Garganta del Diablo and Cementario). However no one was present here to collect money for the Las Huellas de Dinosaurio hike.

The hike is beautiful, you walk through people's fields and abandoned stone houses. We enjoyed it more than the prints, there are less prints than we expected. The path is not always obvious, look for the modern stone building with an orange roof, 3 windows and 3 doors (the prints are to the right of this house in 2 separate locations).

Also, visit the private museum in Maragua, you get to touch the artifacts and Crispian is a very nice guy!

Stayed here overnight with to small vans. Very quiet and leveled (there are some flat stones which do the rest). The day after we walked through the prints. Just follow the upper road/path and the house mentioned in the post below. Upper road is not possible to drive! Paid 20 Bolivianos per person to an old lady who came to us and showed us where more printings are.

The track to this spot is now well graded. You can drive on from here (lower track to the left) on a rough track and get much closer to the dinosaur prints. The upper right track leads most probably back to Potolo. / the rough track ends in a field, from there head towards a new looking building (red-brown roof / 3 windows). The dinosaur prints are right there some meters to the right on a grey 70x100mts rock slap (-19.066297 -65.478897)
