Leaving China was quick & easy, our agency had a fixer to organize everything.
Entering Mongolia was a bit funny: the first thing they ask is to pay the road tax of 10.000MNT. But there is only sand around you, no ATM and no chance to get cash. I showed them all the MNT I still had from a previous visit and after some discussion with the colleagues he had to accept it :-)
There are 2 ATM in the basement of the customs building, but they did not work. I think they knew it :-) There is a bank as well to change cash money - if you have some :-)
With the road tax reciept you go into customs building and do your car paperwork. No money needed, just patience :-)

Report Check-In

We arrived in the evening with our Land Cruiser and just camped in front of a border gate next to some trucks - big mistake: We realised in the morning it’s the wrong queue (stupid tourists..)
Make sure that you park your car in the winding lane of endless UAZ jeeps. In the morning around 7am there were around 150-200 Mongolian jeeps waiting.

We talked to the border guys and told them about our Chinese guide waiting on the other side, after some time he sent us to the Autobus-lane a bit further north. From there on it went relatively quick (stayed in Autobus-lane until leaving Mongolia).

On the way we picked up some other tourists who were hitchhiking, it is forbidden to cross as a pedestrian. You can pay 5000-8000 to use a Mongolian “taxi”. The pedestrians get off the car at Mongolian passport check, get on the car again and get off at the Chinese passport check (after the quarantine spray). Then again it is forbidden to walk the final 20m as pedestrian into Erenhot (rules are rules^^), pedestrians need to get on any car again (Chinese police men are helping to stop one for you).

Chinese side was more straight-forward.

Regarding customs clearance of our car: We arrived too late on the Chinese side (around 11am), so we had to stay overnight in Erenhot and got our car out of customs at around noon the next day.

Enjoy China :)

Iit is forbidden to cross the border with bicycles. you have to put the bikes in a jeep. We paid 15,000 MNT to put the bikes in a jeep and cross the few kilometers. We paid 5000 MNT more for the Mongolian formalities (X-ray baggages). However the coupon has not been asked ... Backchich?
It took us 2 hours to cross.
