Darwaza fire crater, still burning since 1980

Beautiful man made disaster. Especially at night it's magical. The road from the Uzbek border to the crater is horrible though. I think it took us an extra 50 km to zig zag between all the potholes, just horrendous. Took us 9 hours with 4 vehicles (one was a truck so that's why we couldn't do more than 20-30 km/h).
Report Check-InAwesome place to see, especially at night. The road to the crater is okay, doable for most vans/cars/bikes.
Report Check-InI managed to arrive to the crater with my vespa... so everybody can do!;-)
Report Check-Inroad to here should be no prob for 2wd,
pnly a few rough spots, but nothing sandy, now plenty of yurts, and eben a small plane landing strip,
we stayed a little uphil from the crater, great view, no facilities
The track is really good. We passed with our 2w without any problem. We slept just next to the hole.
Report Check-InWe were quite impressed by the amount of light and warmth from the crater. Good to see at night. The track to get here is really good now, we tagged the exit from the main road to get here. No need for guides or hired transport. Plenty of camping spots around
Report Check-InCame here in my 2wd vw t5 no problen to get here. And i think no one will have any problem briving here the road is bumpy but hard.
Half october nobody around
We took our 2002 1.2L VW Polo to the crater. It did make it down and back with the help of a nice chap on a motor bike, plus several lorry drivers to help push us out of the sand traps. The crater was amazing; giant pit of flames. We brought our own tent and camped for free. Would highly recommend if you're in that neck of the woods.
Report Check-InThere are kids with motorbikes at the road to the crater. Negotiated that they will bring us to the crater. Thought we’d go on their motorbikes. They insisted on driving our 2wd car.
They ended up ripping away the protection under the engine!
Do not let them drive your car!!
Also don’t ask them for directions as they led others straight into the sand, only to demand money later to pull them out.
be carefull...we heard that there are some people with the motorbike who want to show you the way. they show a bad road and when you stuck, they ask for 100dollar to help.
roads are better since one month. so its possible to drive there if you have a good driveing knowledge.
crater is still burning. very nice, specially at night!
Got there with our 2WD 6 meter Ducato van without any issue.
We first set camp by the crater, but the air was so bad that we ended up moving a little uphill.
Very impressive site at night, a lot less after sunrise
