August 2023 - border closed and no one passing

Report Check-In

The border is now open. It took us 2 hours to go from Turkmenistan to Uzbekistan. At the Turkmen side we had to pay $5 exit fee for the car and got a receipt for it. We tried not to pay, but our guide told us it’s mandatory. They check the vehicle upon exit.

Uzbek side very easy, stamp in the pasport and a check of the car for medicine. Dog was no problem. Nice guys.

Report Check-In

We got the information from the german embassy and also from the turkmen borderguards in nukus that all borders from turkmenistan to iran are closed since the 8th of january. But we were able to cross the border from Ashgabat to Bajgiran without problems on the 13th of january from turkmenistan to iran with a car.

Similar experience UZ->TM as aimlessnameless below. Uzbekistan immigration DID ask for hotel registration slips upon exit.

Tried to sweet-talk a 7-day transit visa for Turkmenistan and was told, "We have only five-day transit visa."

Transit visa has entry/exit dates AND locations printed on it.

Turkmenistan entry:
Visa fees $55
"Passport registration" $10
Bank fees $6 and $4
Motorcycle disinfection $1
"For entry and transit passage" $15
"For compensation of the fuel cost" $50
Insurance $15
"For processing the documents" $5
Bank fee (again) $4
Total for one person, one motorcycle: $165

Compensation of fuel costs calculated based on route and vehicle size/type. In my case, 1238km calculated (Konurgenc to Turkmenbasi) with 652cc motorcycle.

Total time: 2.5hrs, excluding Turkmenistan lunch break 1pm-2pm

Didn't get a GPS tracker.

All very official, with receipts, very friendly. Just lots and lots of bureaucracy, paper stamping, and fees.

Entering In Turkmenistan by motorbike:

14$ for passport
68$ for insurance and fantastic things

All registered in papers

Report Check-In

Heading into Turkmenistan we were not given a GPS (motorcycle), but they were quite thorough about our planned route. Friendly and relaxed border on the whole, really. We paid $91 for vehicle fees/processing, plus $70 each for visa fees. Only seemed to be one guard who spoke English. And do beware the previously mentioned lunch break! We just caught it (~12:30-14:00 on the Turkmen side), and then couldn’t really make it to the gas crater before nightfall. Make sure you have some snacks. Took us maybe two hours total, excluding down time from the break.

Report Check-In

We crossed UZB -》TKM. Everything still as reported in the post before. Payed also 140$ for 2 visas and for the car (Land Rover Defender 130) in total 115$. For both borders we needed 3 hours.

Report Check-In

border is open from 9am to 6pm.
exit UZ : 45 minutes, ask for registration paper, we show 3 and it was ok, no checking of the car, more waiting than control.
enter Turkménistan : 9h45 to 12h10, 2h15 for paper work and 10 minutes for checking vehicule!
Visa at the border : 140$ - assurance and taxe for vehicule 187$ (Fiat Ducato SLX 2015, 3,5T).
1- doctor and check temperature ? migration paper to fill up
2- Visa 140$ 5 days. no problem, we gave the invitation letter from Bichkek consulate
3 - insurance taxe paperwork....and a tracker not a GPS! tracker cost 10$ that you will give back to the exit border 😉 total 187$.
don't even sure the tracker works but anyway they know wich road and where you stop. the migration write it.
4- car control less than 10 minutes. they were more curious than anything else.

Turkmenistan to Uzbekistan - no problem, nothing to pay, everybody was friendly!

But they have a lunch break on the Turkmen side! From around 12:30-14:00.

Report Check-In

opening time 9am. Took me 3.5 hours to cross onto Turkmenistan - but mostly because I was picking up my Turkmenistan visa at the border. Not much English on the Uzbek side, but on the Turkmen side there's a nice young man with good English.

Report Check-In

Border is open 9:00 to 17:00, we got there around 18:00 and had to wait until the morning. They would've let us sleep inside, had our visas expired that day.

They briefly checked our stuff again while exiting Turkmenistan. They did not care about the GPS device. We paid a 15USD fine for having exited at a different border than the one initially declared.

Easy and calm border. Turkmenistan side no problems, young officer who spoke good English did all the paperwork for us. Gps tracker was not really checked, we hardly branched it in the car as we preferred our own :-). Uzbek side rook longer because of lunchbreak. Very friendly people. We did not pay anything on both sides.

Report Check-In

No problem, no money. They don t speak about insurance for the car but we take it one in Noukus, it s cheap.

Report Check-In

We went from Tkmn to Uzbkn. Easy, there was a young military man who spoke English and acted as a translator in the registration of the vehicle.. For the dog it was a little more complicated. The veterinarian did not know the European passport and asked many questions but in the end it was fine, the veterinary control was very simple.

Easy border with car. Exiting Turkmenistan you have to give back all the paper staff you got by entering and the gps. They check it. Fill out a declaration form and then they'll insert all your data in different books. After that the stamp in passport and at least car control. Car control was simple. No problem with extra Diesel. Usbek was even more simple. Drive through the desinfection. Then separate passenger. Register the car and you get 2 documents. Car check was detailed but maybe just for interest. Everything was friendly and easy. Nothing to pay, no doctor visit. Good border experience.
