Description

Free camping in Buchanan State Forest. You can see all of the clearings by viewing the Forest in Google Maps satellite view. Many options to choose from. This is my favorite as it’s totally hidden from the road and completely private.

My description is not for 40.00621, 78.17111 .My description in fact is for 40.01215 , 78.13132. Bark Road to Mitchell Trail, site SH 007. State Forest sites in Pa. are no longer free for motorized camping.

Site is still here and in good condition. The entrance to this site could be problematic if it is muddy due to the downhill grade to the site. We spent the night and moved on.

This is a nice, secluded spot, one of many. Calling the forest service got me a return call within a day (I called during the week) And I was able to quickly, over the phone, register for a free site. The woman on the phone was knowledgeable about the sites and very friendly and offered me one that was convenient for my travels. The site itself is simply a clearing off of a dirt road off of a state highway. There is signage indicating that there are campsites down that road, but don’t expect to see a sign indicating that a campsite is a campsite. Like others have mentioned, I had a Strong signal from my phone.

Private, dark, and quiet. Some sites like this one are big enough for a small group. Be warned that the transitions from the road grade to campsite can be a bit steep. I scraped my motorcycle carrier pretty badly coming in. Half-scale Verizon signal, full-scale T-Mobile, good data throughput on both.

Great spot tucked away from the main road. Super quiet. Very flat . Bring bug juice . Bring your dog, mountain bike and hiking shoes .
