Description

Wild camp on hill top next to ruins overlooking Sparta. Sign posted concrete road/track from main road is ok for 2wd but is not suitable for big rigs because of low olive trees and two very sharp turns half way up. Good 4g Vodafone coverage.
There is also a small Chapel here. So Sat night/Sun morning might not be a good time to camp.

Very nice place overlooking Sparta. Stayed here from Saturday to Sunday. Just one or 2 people came by to walk their dogs. 2WD People don't fear 😉

A most wonderfull place to spend a night. Even on warm days some wind. flat place to park your car. Guess the road has been repaired, it was no problem to drive up ( no big campers possible !)
Fantastic view on sparti and mystras . Some people came in the evening. Very friendly

We had a great night on the top of the hill. Beautiful view, no one arround. We came from the south as maps told us so. No problem with a 110. But bigger vehicles should be careful. Two turnarrounds can be difficult and what should be a bigger problem: the olive trees are close to the road and difficult to pass.

We tried driving up with our Ford Focus but there is a small part of the road with stones and sand where our wheels were spinning. We saw a lot of locals drive up there with normal cars so it should be possible to drive up there with 2WD you just have to give enough speed. We were too worried about our car to do this so we stayed at the parking ground of the church which is at some places nearly even. Not a verry nice spot because you could hear the road verry clearly and a lot of locals came by the afternoon and the next morning but nobody bothered us. It is perfectly fine to stay a night before visiting Sparta and Mystras. Even if you stay at the church give it a try and walk up the hill in the evening during sunset. It is beautiful!

A bit windy but very nice place for a night!

Report Check-In

Arrived Sunday evening before sunset, amazing view on Sparta and mountains around, nobody around. Driving on the tracks with our Suzuki Vitara was easy, even in wet weather. I think a 2WD could do it with proper tyres and adequate pressure. But it could be challenging with a larger or heavier vehicle. Arriving from the north is a bit steep with two sharp turns. It seems more gentle from the south but there are a few muddy patches in rainy weather (2WD's, beware!).

Unfortunately absolutely impossible without 4x4. We have been crazy and tried it out with a VWT5. We lost :(

This place is really nice and the view is spectacular. The road up is a little sketchy. Low olive branches and ruts that could easily pop a tire in a 2x drive if not careful. We went really slow in the Landrover.
