From Crestone, you can drive to the north backcountry entrance to the National park. You can get permits to hike in and camp from here. It’s a gorgeous landscape with sand trails to a cabin. I spent the day here, quiet and safe. No signs saying no camping or overnight parking so it might be fine for a car or van for a night. Pit toilets, good cell service.
