Description

Ski resort with a single 1.5 km long ski slope (Skiing in Winter only). Lots of other activities on offer during non-ski seasons. It is located just after the Mahlasela pass (3280 m a.s.l.). Huge sign by the road, can't miss it.

Latest Check-Ins

We booked a room here as it was winter. Quite expensive, and very disappointing. We had no running water, no WiFi, a very small room. I would truly recommend not to stay the night here. We talked to the hosts but they did not change a single thing.

No snow this year because of the power cuts (???) this was the oficial version… seems that the owners are notnin their best situation…

They let us stay in the parking place of the backpackers in our 9tn truck, after telling them that we have a heater… we paid R607 for a room of 2 and slept 4 of us in the truck.

In the morning was everything covered by snow and -5°. Nice!

100R pp to enter the site, 50R of that can be spend at the restaurant.
ski season was open but of the climate change and many load sheddings there was no snow. was a sad view. totally empty. restaurant and bar was good though. and very friendly staff. good coffee. nice and funny experience.

We also could enter without paying a fee. New restaurant which serves great food and coffee. A very nice stop.

We were also not blocked at the gate and were allowed to drive to reception to enquire about accommodation and snowboarding.

We stayed at the backpackers for 325 rand pppn - very expensive for what you get. Bedding is an additional 150 rand so we opened our roof tent to extract our own bedding. Room was still freezing in the evening. There is a kitchen but no cutlery or utensils. Snow boarding for first timers costs around 1200 rand pp for the day - which includes a two hour group lesson and your snow pass for the day. Slopes close at 4pm. No ATM on site but reception can give you cash if you need. Everywhere at afriski accepts card payments.

We were not blocked at the gate, they let us drive to reception.

We wanted to ski for 2 days and stay 3 nights. After a short negotiation they allowed us to camp at the backpackers hut (inside our big rig, not a tent) if we paid the price of 1 bed in the dorm (325 p2ppn). No power point outside but we could use the toilets/showers in there and there is power inside.

Report Check-In

They charge 50 ppn for day visitors, even when you just want to drink a hot choclate or have lunch in the restaurant there!
On top they don't allow you to go by yourself to the reception to ask for accomadation or have a look on the rooms. They bloc you at the gate and want you to pay first entry and then go to the reception! You will get a refund when you stay overnight but for us not welcoming to guests!
Bad policy! We did not stay!!! Better to spend your money in a small local guest house or restaurant!

During skiing season from June to August there is no wild camping in front of the chalets possible. The place is really like an European ski area with apres-ski bar and restaurant. Since it doesn't snow in Summer here, they only can produce artificial snow, which makes it a bit weird. In the end we weren't sure, if we liked the place or if the whole area is way too artificial, since the locals just a few kilometres away are still Iiving without electricity!
But we still have to admit that we enjoyed the hot chocolate and the Glühwein
