Description

Officer claimed we needed a document he called an 'avant pass' or somesuch because we were entering a 'no-go zone' supposedly. Then his collegue used the distraction to take my keys. They were rather impolite and haughty. Got through with the help of a local and their chief showing up and telling them they were wrong - ask them to call him if you have trouble. Your laissez passer is all you need.

Passed with a car with German registration. On this checkpoint the passport information is written in a big book by an immigration officer.
No bribes needed.

I think it’s a very outdated information that motorbikes need special permit papers. We passed this CP twice on two bikes and weren’t even stopped once. No other motorbike travelers we know of were asked for anything in the past year, so if it was the case, tgen it’s a thing of the past.

If you ride your motorcycle in the environs of Monrovia city you'll need to be in possession of a permit that's issued by the Police.
The purpose of that permit is to help prohibit 'commercial riders' (i.e. the 'phen phen' motorycle riders) from clogging up the roads and whom, with their typically wild & inconsiderate riding, often cause accidents and other mayhem.
Accordingly, if you get caught riding a motorcycle within the Monrovia city limits but without that permit you can expect the Police to give you a really hard time (as they're under orders that riders without that permit are to have their motorcycle impounded) and thereafter you might need to make a 'cold water' contribution to the Police to have them release yourself and your motorcycle.
That Monrovia city motorcycle riding permit is available (free of charge) from the Police HQ located in Monrovia city Centre (go to the Traffic Department with your motorcycle registration, insurance, driving license, passport.. and wait patiently).

All good at the police stop. We showed passports and that is all they asked.

Be careful though. After the stop going towards liberia there is a shanty house area with a lot of crime. Keep your windows closed as they attempted to steal from us while blocked in the traffic.

I think this was the same checkpoint as mentioned

Anyway. They wanted bike papers. I said fine, but as this was basically a checkpoint on the edge of the market and  the usual troupe of 30-40 onlookers had materialised. That i preferred to go into a secure private place before getting my documents and panniers open. Or they could disperse the crowd. For my security in a city with crime. It worked. They waived me on

I didn't know it was this checkpoint at the time. I was just having a long day! Either way. Suggest a similar approach
