Description

Immigration straightforward with a Tourist Card. You need to leave your vehicle within the customs premises and walk a few hundred meters into Albina to buy an insurance. Customs officers wil give directions. After you have the insurance getting the TIP was straightforward. 10 min. for the total customs/immigration process. We got 1 month for the vehicle and ourselves.

Update September 2023: you can get the Suriname only insurance at the liquor store on the other side of the road. For the Suriname and Guyana combined insurance, you need to walk 400m to the Godo Bank (search for it on maps.me, it's not on Google maps)

Very quick immigration if you've gotten a printed copy of your tourist card with you (having a copy is mandatory anyways while in the country). I just had to show this and my passport and within a minute it was all done. quite funny too that as a cyclist we bring our bicycle through the office. a rarity when it comes to border crossings!

We got stamped in Suriname without problems, but because we crossed the river on a small boat with our motorbikes (the ferry is closed for a month for repairs so it's the only way) when we went to the customs they told us it's illegal to bring a vehicle with those boats. The officer was angry about it at the beginning but he said he would have make an exception for us and he was nice after that, but be aware if you cross this border with a boat which is not the official ferry.
We've been asked for our international driving permit for the first time in South America.
You can buy insurance from the shop in from King's (we pays 3us dollars each bike for a month)

Entering Suriname with a car, two persons and a dog.
We took the first ferry at 7am. Make sure to check the schedule as it is different everyday. (The ferry is not operating from 28th of September 2023 to 30th of October 2023 due to maintenance)
We arrived in Suriname at around 7:20am. We could only do the immigration at first because you need the insurance before you get the TIP at the customs office.
There is small liquor shop just on the other side of the road from the customs building. 10 seconds walking distance. The shop opens at 8am. They sell the insurance for Suriname only for 10€ or 320 SRD. If you want to get the insurance for Suriname and Guyana, you can get that at the Godo Bank around 400m from the customs building. You cannot find it on Google Maps, only on Maps.Me. Because we wanted to be done as quick as possible, we only got the Suriname insurance.
The customs officer was extraordinarily friendly. He showed us where we could exchange money (see other point on iOverlander - Filter: Financial) and where to get the insurance.
To enter with a dog we got a health certificate from a vet in Cayenne that was then stamped by the DAAF in Cayenne. This was all we needed to enter Suriname.
All in all a quite easy process. Just remember to drive on the left side. The road to Paramaribo was in perfect condition. Not a single pothole.

Traveling from Suriname to French Guyana with vehicle:
Get in line for vehicle ferry. When you are waved up to pass through the gate have TIP ready. Give TIP to DOUANA guy. Then drive in and park in line. While you wait for next ferry to arrive, enter the building with your passports. Go to immigration window for exit stamp. That’s it, you and your vehicle have exited Suriname. No one asked about papers for our dogs to exit Suriname.

You don't have to go into town to buy the insurance - they sell it now in the tax-free shop by the border-post. Very easy and quickly done.
