Description

This is an 'Unesco world heritage site', it is an protected village where you can see an unique collection of mud houses, founded in the 17th century by people fleeing the slave-grabbing forays of Benin's Dahomeyan kings.
Very interesting and nice.

CFA 1500 pp entrance
CFA 10 000 for a guide!

We negotiated the price down to CF 5000 but we are sure you do not need one.
Our guide Michael showed us one house and then he wanted to go back....
After complaining about his behaviour he showed us another and bigger house and some other stuff so it eventually was worth the money.

Negotiated the price down to 7000 CFA after about half an hour and almost leaving. While the tambera compound I was shown was nice, you can see how many have fallen into disrepair. It's a shame really as it appears that of the entrance paid almost nothing if anything reaches the farmers who live in the compound and are most likely the ones maintaining it.

This is the place for the ticket.

1500 cfa for goverment entrance
10000 cfa for the comunity.

This prices can be negotiated, in my case I paid 6000 in total. The comunity fee is in reality the price of the guide who will give small tips at the villages you visit, so if you bargain the price, expect the guide complain about visit many villages.

If you come with mototaxi, have in mind before negotiate the price for the motorbike, that the guide will drive the motorbike from this point and your previous driver will wait until you return.

Despite this, the visit was very interesting, the villages are authentic and awesome. Also expect some people trying to sell souvenirs, but not too much.

Daniel, the guide I had, speak english and is very friendly. You also can sleep in the traditional house of their parents if you want.

We somehow avoided this barrier on the way in (satnav lead us down a tiny track and joined the main road just south of where this waypoint is recorded but as it turns out, north of the barrier -which is listed in slightly the wrong location). We drove around the valley and visited the museum (1000CFA per person, in the town of Nadoba) which was a fun look at a 'sample house'.

As we left we followed the main track (N40) and came across this check point. We pointed out we had already paid to visit the museum and had not actually visited the 'Tamberma compound' which both our lonely planet and the ticket they showed us listed as the 1500CFA chargeable UNESCO attraction. They tried to tell us you have the pay the 1500CFApp to use the road, whilst we debated this a policeman rode past and we stopped him and explained the situation, he spoke to the people at the barrier who then apologised and we were allowed to leave. The N40 is a public road and not a UNESCO attraction. The valley is beautiful and museum fun.

we crossed from Benin and didn't want to visit Unesco. When we exit from the area there was a road block and some guy showed us dirty Tshirt from Unesco that he had in his bag saying we have to pay 1500 pp because we were driving through Unesco village... we laughed at him and refused to pay. He said he's going to call somebody to punish us so we encouraged him to call and left. Of course nobody punished us. I'm wondering if Unesco really know what is happening there...

After first having a confrontation on the road shortly after coming in from Benin and refusing to pay their 1500cfa/person 'visit fee', we had a worse confrontation around here at their 'official' roadblock. The prices for tours on the wall are still as described by others but they demanded we pay the visit fee just for driving the road in from Benin. We refused and drove off but it's probably more difficult if you're driving the other direction towards Benin.

It's sad really but for now I totally agree with the comment that they're ruining this for themselves. We had a decent tour in Benin in Kousoucoingu (3 hours tour for 2500/person complete and shorter/longer tours available). I recommend visiting the Tata in Benin.

After reading the comments on here we were a bit reluctant but thought we should try. I wanted to pay 3 000 CFA for 2 people but they showed us the 'official prices' on the wall, we needed to pay CFA 5 000 for a small tour to only one house and CFA 10 000 for a tour of the whole village. The guide has to come with you in your own car.

After seeing the picture of one house on the wall, and thinking about all these reviews and how the prices change and are negotiable. We decided to not enter.

They told us we had to pay CFA 10 000 not for the guide, but for all the 'entrance fees' in the village. So we don't have to pay the entrance fees over there. After 2 minutes they said 'it was for the village community'.

They ruin this for themselves.

Area where you can visit ancient Villages/Houses. Upon arrival you have to pay. The Sign said the following:
- Visit non Nationals: 1.500 CFA pP
- Guide: 5.000 CFA
- Bonne Visite: 10.000 CFA

Of course they wanted us to pay the full package, 18.000 for the Visit. They could not really explain what "Bonne Visite" means and why it's so expensive. Visiting without Guide was (obviously) not recommended. After bargaining it went down to 13.000 and then it went down to 8.000 for the Following:
- We took the Guide in our Car to one Village (15 km easy dirt track one way).
- There we visited two ancient Houses.
- After that we were lead to souvenirs made by the villagers.
- Drove back with the Guide.

It took one Hour in total. Guide was friendly and explained well (French). After all it felt a bit touristic but it was okay.
