Description

Price for visiting the waterfall is 20usd or 40,000bfr per person. I asked about camping and the guy selling tickets said no at first because there is no security. He eventually agreed and walked all around the nice falls. It's a nice spot and camping would be great but the longer I stayed the more and more people showed up to stare. Maybe it would have been fine overnight, but I didn't like the vibe, so I left without camping.

45 minutes drive from the Waterfalls (Southeast direction) you have the Nyakazu Break (also called Failles des Allemands). A nice canyon with view to the lowland towards Tanzania. We were allowed to visit on the same ticket as the waterfall

Took a daytrip from Gitega, roughly 4h round trip. Follow Tracks4Africa, NOT google maps. You first turn off the paved road onto an ok gravel road and then eventually that road becomes quite bumpy and steep. But no problem with a Landcruiser or other high clearance vehicle. Paid the 40 USD entrance fee in cash as per below. Asked if we could pay in local currency but no. You then drive right up to the first fall. Lots of locals, especially kids, hang around the waterfalls. Someone tried to be our guide, but we politely declined. Although maybe that would have been good, as there are no signs and we didn’t find all the waterfalls. We spent an hour wandering around the two upper falls and eventually took a shower under the one below the hanging bridge and sat and had a snack there before walking back up. The walk isn’t far, but it’s quite steep and rocky.

Nice visit when you have a bit time to take a detour from the mainroad. It is 12km of quite rough dirtroad to get here, 4x4 or high clearance advisable. They ask now 20$ dollar pp for entrance. They only wanted dollars, but we didn't had them. So eventually they agreed with 40.000 shilling. But they weren't happy with it. You can drive to the first waterfall and walk from there down to 2 more waterfalls and the beautiful walkingbridge above one of them. We went with the same ticket also to the viewpoint of the canyon Nyakazu Break mentioned below (called Failles des Alemands in google maps). I also added a photo of the viewpoint there. It is 45 minutes further south. I think that both at the falls and at the canyon you can do a bit more hiking, but we didnt had enough time. We sadly had to drive all the way back, passed the waterfalls, to the mainroad as the road going further after the canyon was closed because the road washed away. We were there in rainy season. Worth a visit.

Nice falls, makes for a good day trip from Rutana, together with the nearby Nyakazu Break. Not sure about camping, there was a sign indicating that there is a hotel in Shanga, the village next to the falls where the entrance fee is to be paid.
Prices as stated below - 5000 BIF for Burundian nationals, $ 10 for non-Burundian residents and $ 20 for all others. Paid $ 10 when I said I was resident but forgot my residence card. If you didn't bring small dollar notes, make sure that the fee is calculated according to the official exchange rate, not the black market one.
A motor from Rutana to the Karera Falls, the Nyakazu Break and back cost me 30.000 BIF.

The waterfalls are beautiful, there’s actually 4 falls here.
A security/ police guard came with us, not because it’s dangerous but to be our guide. He took us down to the bottom of one and up to the top of another, which is all included in the admission fee.
About 3 km before the falls, you need to stop and pay entrance fee to the police.
It’s $20 or 60,000bfs so it’s cheaper if you pay in dollars, we showed them the conversion rate and then they said it’s ok to pay 37,000bfs each.

The road here is an ok dirt road for 14km off the sealed road.

I had asked about this "alimane" place which I think is a gorge or canyon..guy said same price to go there, but on the way out he tried to negotiate, say I g only 30,000bfr. I didn't go, still not certain what it is exactly. but there was a sign to it fro. the paved road and in the little village where you buy a ticket for the falls.
