Something not right?

Description

Requested first 25000, then 50000 francs for a foreign car/truck. Did not show any official document or receipt, but the police backed them. We were willing to pay 4000, the fee for DRC cars but there was not really room for negotiation. We were angry and went back to Yema and took the dirt track toward the ocean and went on this road to Moanda. The dirt track was perfectly fine, we hardly ever used 4x4.

Ask for a receipt before you pay. Otherwise you got to pay again in Matadi.

The guy first wanted 12,50 USD category H for our Jeep Wrangler but he let us go without paying since he didn’t have a receipt.

We paid later in Matadi 27 USD and got a proper receipt.

As we drove here with someone from the border (had to get the cdp stamp in muanda because of Christmas :D), we had nothing to pay lol. They just let us trough. But I would pay it here to have the receipt for the later ones.

Report Check-In

We had to discuss a little bit for the price as he asked for 65000 in the beginning. At the end we payed 30000

Report Check-In

Get ready for a long discussion. The guy knows that we all communicate with each other, telling each other how much each of us paid. He didn’t get angry though, it was more like he wanted us to feel guilty about „tricking him“ (which we’re not). At some point he gave up and accepted our 25000.

Report Check-In

Very friendly people although we were here for a little while due to a very convoluted Google Translate conversation. Park up and head to the grey building at the end. The prices are advertised and they can take US dollars, with Congolese Francs as change.

Like everyone they first asked for 50k for our 4x4. We’ve made the mistake to tell them we knew it was not right and it was the same for other travelers who paid 25k at the end. He didn’t like that. So my advice : just pretend you don’t have enough cash, he just wants to make you feel like he’s making you a favour. After 30min talk we finally paid only 25k (we could pay in Kwanza, they gave the money back in Congolese francs)

Report Check-In

We had to pay 25 000 FC for a T4 (they first asked for 50 000) but as we had no currency we could pay in Lufu. Be careful, no ATM before Matadi.

Report Check-In

They tried to make us pay 50.000 as well but we said straight away we heard about the trick and would only pay 25000. They agreed straight away.

Report Check-In

Friendly and nice people but we had quite a long discussion about the price. They wanted to charge 50k francs but the price for a ‘voiture’ was 25k. Price list was on the wall in the office. They said that this cheaper rate only applied to small cars and not 4x4s. Eventually they agreed 25k but said that they would do it as a favour.

Report Check-In

They ask 50k (25 $) for a "Jeep" 4x4. But on their official list, a "voiture" (car) is 25K. Next step is "camionette" (van/ little truck) and "bus". "4x4" never appears on their list and to us, it is a regular car. We finally paid 25 k after a pleasant discussion, they were friendly.
We dont think there is any point of avoiding this border road tax because they will ask you to pay in Lufu or Noqui if you dont have the receipt given here... And in Lufu, there was a lot more officials hanging around, it seemed more complicated to negotiate down the price over there.
The road was easy even in rain saison. Not sure 4x4 is needed (maybe for one or two sections) but its quite a maze (lots of tracks going everywhere). You need to go to Muanda and then you go to Boma. Dont follow the main road on Maps.Me, follow the tracks in use and ask locals for the direction of Muanda.

Report Check-In

It would have been 25'000 but I had no cdf currency, so they wrote down my numberplate and let me go, saying I would have to pay on the last bit of road to lufu (See checkpoint on iO)

Report Check-In

Did not pass this toll station, customs official at border said it is no longer there and seems the new road from the border misses the old location so no toll to pay. We still had the bridge toll at Matadi, the road tax on the RN1 and the toll near the Luvo border. We did not find the toll at Boma either but passed through two unmanned new toll stations so maybe plans for the future.

Report Check-In

After we left the border we simply continued our way straight on the dirt/sand road and ended up in Moanda; never met a road tax check point 😃

Wanted to charge 200.000,- for our truck. We blocked the barrier for one hour, they were very angry. Luckily 15 trucks from Cabinda arrived and they got very nervous, we could pass with 50.000,-

Report Check-In

Long discussion, was very angry. They charged me 50.000 (30$) for a Landrover. You can see the list in their office. 25.000 for a car and 50.000 for a small truck or a bus. Word for Jeep/4x4 is not existing. Was in a hurry otherwise I would blocked them their barrier with the car.

Report Check-In

As the border is closed on Sunday so is the road toll. We did a late border crossing on Saturday (border closes at 4pm on Saturday), camped on compound of the border post and just lifted the deserted barrier Sunday morning. In Boma we pretended to have payed in Iema on Saturday and to have lost the receipt, as the road toll was closed they could not call to verify. Let us go after 45 min of discussion. Same in Luvo.

5000 for a moto. 25000 for a car (might need to argue with them if you have a bigger rig). I added a photo with all of the prices, which was posted in the office.

Report Check-In

I paid $10. Officially it seemed to be 25000 francs.

Report Check-In

I paid 50 000 after a long discussion. Later I coincidentally met a representative of the road tax organisation and he confirmed me that it is maximum 10 000 for a foreign vehicle. When I told him I paid 50 000 he said it was an incredible theft and corruption and said it was totally unacceptable. Also, when you pay in Matadi or Iema, you don’t have to pay anywhere else (except for the bridges).

It was a nice adventure to skip the roadtax roadblock and take the alternative road. We managed it with our 2x4 campervan. The first part of the road was interesting because there was hardly a path and mostly grass. We survived it. And then there was a small path used by motorbikes so it was a little bit better. And then the road became less small and it went very well. There is some mud and in rain season it can be difficult. After several kilometers the small path becomes a nice gravel road. So we skipped the road tax and got an adventure in return so it is really worth taking the alternative road. The beginning of the road is difficult to find but some locals help us out fine. Thanks for sharing...😀

Official rates for the locals are 1000francs for motorbike and 5000francs for cars . But because you are a tourist obviously the rates go up. But it was manageable ($10 for 3 motorbikes)

They do give a receipt and at other roadtaxe stops you don’t pay once you show the receipt.

They requested again 50k, which I had payed already at Boma side. So u actually have to pay twice. I had only 10.- usd left and paid that. I passed

Thanks for the Warning. We didn't even try it and went on the Dirt Track directly from the Border. Easy Track in Dry Season, no 4x4 needed.

Report Check-In

We went here to try to bargain about the road tax. It was not possible and they asked 50.000 francs per car. So we went back to Iema, left just before the border gate and drove towards the coast, the road was sandy, but good! We strongly advise to take this road immediately, without going to the checkpoint!!

Report Check-In

We were also asked for 50,000 F for a car. Refused to pay and went around, which took approx 1 hour. Very sandy so 4x4 required. Legitimate fee is 2,500 F (price list is in their office).
