Description

It's 160km from Lethem on often rough tracks to get here but it's a very beautiful drive. We loved the scenery all the way and it's very easy to wildcamp on the way down. We took our time over 2 days (each way) with many stops to explore and swim in a couple of the rivers. At Aishalton, ask for the Tuschau (chief). The map-pin is at a restaurant (no sign) known as 'Burning Mountain'. Here the Tuschau or deputy will find a guide to take you to the petroglyphs and caves (we had Martin who was very good). Very interesting and worthwhile visit and an amazing location. Lunch at the restaurant is also simple but tasty and reasonable. Agree a price for the tour with the Tuschau (we paid a one-off GYD5000 for the guide, plus GYD2000 per person 'community fee'. Afterwards they tried-it-on and said there had "been a mistake" with the fee and we should pay more, but we refused and they backed-down quickly.
Before you set out from Lethem, check the track conditions with the Conservation International Office. After rains the tracks flood and become impassable. When dry, a high-clearance vehicle is required and preferably 4x4 for the occasional sections of mud. There aren't many other vehicles down there, but stay on the 'main' tracks and if you get stuck, someone should pass-by (eventually :-) )
