Something not right?

Description

They want 150 pp, so 300 for two people in a car. Way too expensive for what they offer.

100Leones per person sleeping in our van. Clean area in front on the river, full of shadow. you can take a swim in the riverin front of the Tiwai island locan people also taking a bath in the water. Basic toilet and shower.
We talked with Kinowa (not sure who managed officially)

They offer to us boat to cross the river and walking guide, trying to fit some adapted price but we haven't do anything of this, just walk around and relax with people on the river edge.

No recommendation!

The camp site from one community where the boat leaves for Tiwai Island is unfortunately very greedy and probably wants to shovel a lot of income into their own pockets and community. There are 8 and not just one community protecting the island. And the income from the island is distributed among everyone and used for nature conservation.

They offer more or less nothing at all and discuss endlessly about extremely overpriced prices and when we left they wanted extra parking fees, which of course we didn't pay. In the end we only paid what is written here in iOverlander 100 pp, but the constantly recurring discussions are extremely annoying. This no longer has anything to do with nature conservation, for which I am willing to pay more.

For this reason we didn't book any tours with the campsite itself and I went to the island for an overnight stay. A dream for a day to walk through the rainforest yourself and with a guide. It's best to just park the car in the community ( See iOverlander and spend the night on the island for 1-3 days. I can highly recommend this.

Nice place. 200 per night for 2 in van. 200pp for canoe trip. 100pp for night walk (recommended but a bit of bundu bashing).

Picathartes: it’s possible to see these birds in neighbouring village although I never got past the negotiations with the chief.
They say it’s 500 to visit the cave for up to 5 people including guide. They reduced this to 400 for just myself but then said I had to pay for guide. So no difference!! I lost confidence in these people who basically want you to fund their party fund (a ceremony to keep the birds there every January apparently). Could work out quite reasonable if there are 5 in a group - but I expect they would put the price up if you were 5. I didn’t trust them and left.
You also need to pay 200 for moto taxi to the village.

Very nice community campground in the rainforest. They tried to make everything as good as possible for us.
Basic toilet and shower.
200SL per Car per night.
3 hours walk tour was 450SL per person including the entrance for the island. Absolutely worth it! Lots of monkeys.

I paid all the same prices as below, but they were trying very hard for about double on nearly everything.
Asking 300 SLE for the island access (includes boat transfer), 100 SLE each way for the motor boat, 200 SLE for camping.
the boat can fit 10 and I shared it with 6 passengers who were staying on the island, and were very disappointed with the island food and accommodation, especially for the price. I saw them complain directly to the island manager :)
Camping in the village is definitely the best option, if you can camp.

Nice place, people of the village very friendly, shower and toilet in the camping. The price are the same.

Amazing place next to the little village. Camping is 100 SSL per person. The village can arrange lunch/dinner for 50 SSL each and activities as night walks, canoeing or other things for 100 SSL each. The place is in a lot of shade in walking distance from the river: 10/10. They have hammocks and a bucket toilet and shower.

The camp wasn't officially open when we visited but they said they would make an exception.

They charged us 100,000 leones pp to camp, we tried to bargain but they insisted that was the new price.

100,000pp for boat trip
50,000 pp for dinner.
We didn't see much on the boat trip, just a few birds.

We knew we were getting ripped off but they said the higher prices were due to the fuel shortage. To top the rip off, two men sat around camp chatting late after dark. They were about 4 meters from our tent. I told them we were trying to sleep and asked them to stop talking. They quieted down for a few minutes then started up again.

The next morning the man in charge asked how we slept and I gave him my honest opinion in hopes that other travelers will have a more enjoyable experience.

I don't like being negative about what could be a nice source of income for this community but just wanted to share so you can decide for yourself if it is worth your time and money.

This is a really nice place, people from the village are lovely, prices are very fair, and it’s nice to know your money is going directly to the community. We paid 30,000 pp for camping and stayed 4 nights. We visited the campsite on Tiwai and couldn’t see any justification for their much higher prices. When staying at community campsite you have to pay park entry fees separately if you want to visit the island (150,000 pp) this is normally charged per day however our guide negotiated with the park manager and we only paid one fee despite doing a morning walk and an afternoon walk on separate days (for the walks it’s 30,000 pp for a guide). We also did a boat trip (50,000 upriver / 100,000 downriver - price diff due to v strong currents), no need to pay entrance fees for this. They can also arrange meals, 20,000 pp. We had expected some hassle when it came to the bill as our boat trip ended up taking most of the day (it’s normally 3 hours) but they charged the normal price and were very happy when we gave a modest tip.

The information below is still valid - the camp is open and the description is accurate.

Still open.

Friendly Kambama village chief and manager of Giewubae campsite. We spent the evenings talking with them.

But be prepared to negociate.
They first asked us 100.000 Le per person per night.
We were 2 persons, 1 tent, and no car.
We end up paying 30.000 Le per night per person. (60.000 Le night).

They have open bucket showers and toilets. They will bring you a lot of buckets of water everyday from the well of the village, firewood, chairs... There’s roof space to put the tent and do a fire, near the river.

The shop of the village have literally nothing. Bring food from Bo. In Potoru you can only find onions and tomato paste.
