Description

Amazing camping on Kukonje Island on the east side of the Sua Salt Pan. A few campsites on the island and some of them have a pit toilet. We camped underneath a large Baobab tree. Accessible in dry season only! To get out to the island you have to pass through a veterinary fence, no sign, sometimes register at the gate, here they do also sell fire wood. 100ppp if staff around.

indeed a beautiful wild camp! same style of island than Lekhubu but bigger with less baobabs, however there is nobody there and you will have a 360° view on the immensity of the desertic pan! no house nor light upon the horizon. amazing experience totally free! in dry season no problem to come here even with a big rig I guess, just stick to the tracks.

This is an incredible spot!! 10/10 would recommend! Completely abandoned at the moment but there are so many great camping zones all over the island. One of the most beautiful wild camping experiences we have come across. Not a soul in sight and some serious gazing to be done. Stayed 4 nights and only left because of water supplies running low. We got here, in a tuk tuk, in dry season, so 4x4 should be easy easy

Camped at the biggest baobab tree, not the campsite 1 as campsite 1 has pretty tall grass. Be careful when driving the final 20m stretch to campsite 1, there are 2 big potholes that are hard to see. Easy access no water at this time of the year. We thought we saw water in the distance but as we got close it was just a mirage. No mascom signal. Last signal point is about 20 km before you reach the island, where some isolated houses are by the road

Easy access, if you stick to the tracks completely dry.
Non payment taken. Some staff at the gate though.

Campsite number 1 is our favorite because of the views. No payment required anymore.

Back to the roots: Reception abandoned, building is destroyed. Only signs, no staff. They seem to have left long tume ago. We had really liked to pay the (still) 100pp for the amazing camping possibilities! They should obtain self-issue permit facilities like commonly used in Australia. Quiet, safe, pittoresk, great!

100 ppp very place run by the community. New long drop toilets. Campsite 4 under the Baobab beautiful!!! Campsite nm 1 nice view over the Pan. Cheapest way to sleep on island in a Saltpan.

Back to paying unfortunately in the dry season so P100 per night per adult, kids half price. Campsite 1 has the best sunset view! And look out for the ‘dry’ pan as I got stuck in a soft spot driving on the edge of the pan to the campsite, badly stuck but luckily the 2 guys at reception worked for hours with me to get it out of the wet mud. Enjoy the solitude and amazing sunsets!!

The camp was no longer managed at this time. We spoke to a guy at the vet fence 8 km back and he told us, just go there and find a spot.
The signs and toilets are still there, but the toilets are now in use by the animals.
The road was good at this dry time of the year and we liked it more than Kubu island.

Good place to camp! Lots of flies though!! Campsites have some shade, 4 the most! 100 pula per person per night and no park fees. There are now basic toilets. Bring toilet paper and water as none here. Roads to get there are quite ambiguous but fun! Some wet patches. We wild camped 11km on the pan the night before which was great!

Beautiful island on the Sua Pan, there are 6 campsites spread over the island, number 1-3 on the North and West side overlooking the pan and number 4-6 in the South and further inland, they are not visible from each other, we did not find pit toilets at the sites but a few of them were stored at the reception area ready to be put in, sites only have concrete table and benches at the moment (the kind you would put in your garden, not the ones found on rest areas), even though it was dry season there were some wet and muddy spots on the way to the island so don't slow down, guy at vet fence is still selling firewood, 100Pula (8,50€) pp and therefore still much more affordable then Kubu Island, we did not stay as it was too early and too windy but drove around the island and saw some blue wildebeest and two jackals
