Key is finding the priest which lives down below the lodge in a house across the gravel path from a building which could resemble a church. Price is now 250R pppn regardless if you camp, use the bedroom, kitchen, hot shower or not.
Why? By checking in after you’ve visited a place you let others know this place is still functional. You can also add or correct any information.
A little bit run down, but worth the quiet and the confort.
The price is still R250pppn
The reception is the house down, on the other side of the track.

Report Check-InStill very much open. You’ll need to ask around for the priest, but once they know you are there someone will come up and tend to you. Camping outside, but also a dorm room and kitchen/ lounge area. Very good for an overnight stop.
Report Check-InWe found this place via iOverlander, we left this morning at Sani Pass Backpackers Lodge at 09:00am. We arrived at st. James Lodge at 14:00. Looked abandoned but after waiting for a few minutes someone came to collect cash and point out what is available. As we were sleeping on the campsite (lawn in front of the lodge) we got to use the lodge house for a nice hot shower (old school; burning wood to get hot water; wood supplied), sat at the nice fireplace, cooked diner at 4 pit gas stove. Campsite has a nice viewing point over village of st. James.
Report Check-InApparently the main staff had abandoned the lodge which probably affects the look and feel. The bed linen was not changed yet when we arrived and it all looked very scruffy.
No running water and no electricity.
Camping in front of the lodge offers very little privacy, since it’s quite exposed (next to a school and wide open spaces) and can get windy.
Very friendly people though
Basic place with some character. There is a communal kitchen. Hut with no electricity 150rand (they provide heater and oil lamp), nice ensuite room with electricity 300rand. Didn't camp because too cold. Nice surroundings and nice staff.
Report Check-InCamping on flatfish spot in front of basic lodge. 80 rand per person.
Report Check-Incamping in the front of the lodge. Basic facilities, but no electricity so only warm showers if the donkeys on! (R140)
