As with all locations 'under the stars' during the Danakil tour there much rubbish lying around. But this was extreme! We even cut our tour one night short (skipping sunset and a camel caravan which we already saw earlier during the day) because this place us really depressing!
There seems to be no tour operator that actually cares about sustainable tourism. We were very disappointed with the sleeping arrangements, due to the huge piles of garbage everywhere you stay.
I. e. Guides and military guards throw their water bottles away while hiking the Volcano, many empty food cans, plastic bags etc.
Obviously the Volcano and Sulphur lakes are excellent sites. But please introduce 'leave only footprints' and that also starts with all tourist visiting the area.
