Description

Update Feb 2020: road is paved and open! It’s fantastic! Narrow one lane but plenty of spots to pull over for oncoming traffic.

The road is really bad, a bit destroyed over hundreds of meters, big wholes. Honestly if we knew the PE-08B was like that, we wouldn’t have gone to Kuelap (super tiny, hundreds of meters of cliffs). The road is dangerous by car, we have a combi, we don’t recommend you to do it unless you have a bike. Not okay for big rigs, even though we crossed trucks on the road, but for your safety don’t do it.

Read posts below- passable even in big rig.

Latest Check-Ins

This road is completely open and pretty much all paved (maybe 1km good gravel). There are some potholes in one section but that’s it.

Do ask in the towns about landslides or closures...but that’s normal.

Marking this warning as closed...

Report Check-In

The new bridge is opened since one month .

Report Check-In

Open at all times now. We took Road 8B from Leymebamba to Cajamarca and it was absolutely beautiful. VERY narrow roads and lots of switchbacks but so worth it if you have nerves of steel and the time to go slow. One of our favorite scenic drives in the last 10 months! No signal for 90% of it so download your maps and be prepared. We recommend!

Report Check-In

There's still road works here, the road is closed from 6am to 6pm, so you'll have to pass before or after. There's a sign saying the works started September 15th for 60 days but they were still on when we passed

Magnificent scenery. Exciting drive. I’d recommend taking this road- as long as you’re not in a rush.
There was a section closed when I did it, but there was a detour that didn’t add any additional time to my journey (acc to google maps) and went through some beautiful farming villages.

Report Check-In

Road from Celendin to Nuevo Tingo/Kuelap. Mostly scenic asphalt road. Some narrow stretches between Celendin and Leymebamba, but ok for our motorhome (2.3m×7m). Most of the time, oncoming cars are visible from far, so sufficient time to look for a suitable place to cross.

Report Check-In

No construction. Road in great condition. No closures. (We left Leymabamba at noon on Saturday, and got to Cajamarca on Sunday afternoon).

Report Check-In

In great condition now from Leymebamba to Celendin, and open all day...construction is done. there was one rough gravel section after the bridge to turn off to Balsas, but it’s short. The road is skinny with incredible cliff edges...made me a little queasy on the moto! Looking forward to a wider road the rest of the way to Cajamarca tomorrow🙃

Report Check-In

We did this road today in the way Leymebamba to Cajamarca. We left early (6am) because of the other comments but the road works look like over, we didn’t see some. Maybe double check with locals.
The road is good but tiny, if you go easy is not so bad. After Celestin it is a normal road. We did it in 7,5 hours with few stops

Report Check-In

Nous sommes passés aujourd’hui avec notre camper Van de 19 pieds.
Magnifique route, sensations fortes garanties, vue hallucinante, à faire !

The previous post is correct the pe08b between leymebamba and la balsa is basically closed between 8am and 5pm. there is however a detour that goes via atuen, climbs to 4000m at la fila, drops down to chiquibamba and San Vicente de Paúl then rejoins at balsas (I was coming from Chachapoyas) it's all gravel and was a great ride on my Moto. realistically passable in any vehicle if you take it slowly. I did not take it particularly slowly but took about 7 hours from Chachapoyas to Celendín and was one my favourite days of riding so fa in Peru. the signs mention the works should finish 15th June but i doubt it.

Report Check-In

Drove this road today in a tall, wide truck camper. It is narrow, twisty and beautiful. If you meet another vehicle, someone must back up. A few holes and landslides, but nothing too bad. Note: this road is closed between Cajamarca and Leymabamba every day between 8 and 5. Yes.... all day. Police advised us to leave at 6am to pass- it worked. Took 8 hours between the two cities.

The road is in great condition even in the wet season. There is one section just on the celendin side of the bridge to balsas that was pretty destroyed from construction vehicles. Almost the entire drive is stunningly beautiful, but also the most dangerous road I've ever driven. Countless blind curves one lane wide with several hundred meter cliffs and no guard rail with oncoming traffic. All things considered it was truly worth it, just go really slow and keep your eyes on the road. One of the most stunning drives, it took us 3 days in a sprinter. Many opportunities for wild camping and waterfall showers as well.
