Something not right?

Description

Stunningly beautiful area. If you want to avoid the crowds at Big Bend, then this is the place to go. Just as scenic but few visitors. there are a couple sites right by the entrance along with a pit toilet but the majority are primitive sites farther in down a long, rough road with no facilities. You can fill up water at the headquarters (there's a hose behind the registration cabin). There's also WiFi at the headquarters. This is true high desert so expect hot days and cold nights. There's no fee to camp but you do need to purchase a limited use permit which is $12 and good for a year. They sell them online but you have to purchase it before you arrive (www.txfgsales.com).

Latest Check-Ins

Spent the day at big bend and then headed for this quaint and quiet location. It’s just shy of the headquarters and the highway is paved all the way here. (Except for the last little bit once you get off of the highway).

As of this writing the outhouse is out of commission.

There are two shelters. The furthest one in has two picnic tables, and two fire rings and is big enough for a couple of rigs.

As described. Road in actually improves as you go, if you are good for the first mile or so, you should be good all the way. Some areas of deep sand, some dips that may drag back bumper on long rigs. We had no problems in a 2021 Transit AWD long wheel base, extended length (23’ long with 6ft to bumper behind back axle, running board clearance of 4”). Stayed at site FC 7 (see photo of updated map from April 2022) 1.5hr from registration / headquarters. This site, like many has a shade structure on a concrete pad, fire ring, grill on stand and rustic composting toilet. It is one of the few with decent river access (low water when we were here). No cell at all. Game warden stopped by, checked our permit, moved on. Warden said no stay limit in this area. Very clean considering how remote, we did some clean up of broken glass, etc… you should too. Wildflowers just starting to bloom in late February. Really awesome spot, will come back for sure! Gas and supplies in Marathon (1hr from registration / headquarters), cool little grocery / cafe / coffee shop / firewood called French Grocery, highly recommend.

One of the quietest places I’ve ever slept. Beautiful area. Wish I had bout a yearly pass, but did register. Thanks Texas tax payers!

GO HERE!! You’re supposed to have a hunting permit to be on the property BUT they didn’t mess with me at all. I’ll be legit next time! No RV style camping but PERFECT for tent and Overlanders.

Go register in the little shack where all the houses are. Water behind the shack. The front of the grounds has a couple of spots with a pit toilet. If you want the REAL DEAL experience, go through the second gate to primitive camping all the way back to the Rio Grande. There are designated camping spots for 18 miles. Nothing but covered picnic tables and fire rings back here but the views are to die for. Cars won’t make it but I saw a few 2WD trucks. 4WD is highly recommended.
