I was reassured (and, at some point convinced) that the car was safe here, and that nothing had ever happened to any car here before. Local watchman kept an eye on the car, asked for a little tip, so he got 80 for two days and nights. Parking is free, probably even when not booking a trip to the keys. People recommended me Argentina's (that is her name) house. If you want to feel like living the real Honduras you will be at the right place. Accommodation is simple but has everything you need. Shower, sink and wide bed. From the window you can look down the nearby river. Little town in 5min walking distance. I had my motorbike parked close to the house but space is very limited. Cars can maybe park outside. Just ask around... The lady is really nice and she was taking good care of me. We didn't really speak about a price. I gave her 500 Lempiras which included the room and food for the time I stayed. She seemed to be quite happy with that. Note: This is a family stay and to much of negotiating can be considered rude. Just enjoy being part of the family for a while... Close by is a supermarket and local market. There are also great views of the Coca Cola Sign. The owners Mario and Frank are amazing guys always trying to make our stay that much better, they really looked out for us. Mario's brother owns a garage across town with ddi a lot of work to our cars he even owns a jacked up FJ, so he knows the score with rigs. The hostel itself takes up an entire block with high fences, and there is a parking for any size rig and a fair few of them at the same time. There is internet in most of the car park for rigs. The Hostel is very relaxed and quiet, there is a full scale kitchen, free coffee all day, there is also a bar and severing local beers. There is also an outside area with hammocks, a pool table newly refurbished (we watched them do it). They are constantly trying to update the hostel to make it more suitable for Overland rigs. So any suggestions for them would be great! I believe these prices are correct. $30 for a private room $10 for a dorm bed $10 per vehicle (negociable) Highly Recommend. As all public sites in Central America some litter. Depending on where you park and the size of vehicle you are not or a little visible from the road. A country road, though, and very quiet during night. No facilities but close to small shops and eating places in town. We asked both locals and the nearby police if the place is safe for overnight. They all considered it safe. During a weekday it was very quiet, I guess weekends can be different. Free. The dirt road starts at the beginning of the main road between telica and chinandega coming from telica. Its a veru slow drive of about 1,5 hours. You arrive at a small parking where there might be a guardian charging the entrance fee of 3 US pr person. From here you can walk about 1.5 km to the crater. Great views along the whole trail and also from the parking.Asked guardian. Said you can spend the night. Safe. We continued another 10 min along the dirt road which deteriorates and becomes somewhat diffecult. Ends up at a small community where there is a kind of cabana where people visiting the volcano can sleep in hammocks or on mattresses. You can camp there as well. No view but the hike to the volcano and mirador is shorter and easier, about 20-30 min. We spent the night there. Both overnight spots are free. The first parking more quiet. No roosters, dogs etc. Both places have very simple toilets. Volcano and views from volcano towards Volcan Momotombo and San Cristobal fantastic. Worth the long and slow drive. All rooms have a deck with chairs and hammocks, as well as private baths. Some have AC which is $5 USD extra per night. We stayed at a small apartment with a kitchenette including a stove, oven, sink and fridge, plus all cooking utensils and a dining table. We paid 40 USD per night, an awesome deal. Cooking at a real kitchen was a nice change of pace from our camping setup. Everything is well designed, clean and very nice. Some apartments can accommodate up to 6. Book online at booking.com. Or call and make a reservation directly and the owner Milady will discount your price by 15%, same as the commission to booking.com. Since it's a little out of town, its best to rent a bicycle or motor scooter for transport. It's also pretty easy to hitch rides on motorcycles or quad bikes.
