The best place to stay while waiting for your car to arrive is Eka Dolli Nubian Guesthouse – it’s slightly out of Aswan on the west bank, but it’s super clean, friendly and cheap. You can get all your meals there, although its a limited menu but they do have booze!
Very nice, has a pool, plenty of cold Stella beers at LE10 ($2.50), some shade and water to wash cars etc as well as being very close to Karnak temple. We also had an excellent Egyptian meal of Kofta, kebabs and salads prepared there for LE60 ($10)
Run by a rather fascinating, but strict and eccentric Muslim named Nasser. Elias Camp’s big advantage is that it has a nice pool and rooftop terrace. Nasser showed us a very scenic 25km drive around Dakhla Oasis which passed a man made lake, interesting farms of date palms, olives and wheat and some old tombs of the long departed.
Not a campsite but they will take you in if they have a parking space available. Quiet place with toilets and a restaurant.
I paid 200 egyptian pounds for 1 night camping including breakfast (150 without breakfast). Excellent stop between Cairo and Wadi Hettan.
This hostel is run by an Egyptian called Ahmed. It is on the Westbank of the Nile, almost opposite of the Luxor temple.
It has some rather run down huts, a nice veranda with a ven and European toilet and shower. All in an acceptable condition. Camping in a car with rooftent or in a small truck is possible.
Ahmed was very nice and helpful in the beginning but in the end he tried to rip us of. He wanted to have much more money than we had discussed and he got really angry, even insulting.
Perfect desert, nice little museum, small restaurant and toilets for public use. Entrance fee and camping costs 80 pounds per person.
One of the best spots we have been to in Egypt because of the beautiful desert scenery. Ancient whale sceletons are worth seeing. Highly recommended!
About 1.5 km from the Sakkara Country club. It's a nice farm run by Maryanne, a Canadian Lady who has lived in Egypt for ages. Nice green garden, water, bathroom, washing machine. Close to the pyramids. She has horses and a lot of big dogs. Very nice and helpful.
20 US Dollars per site per night.
Huge and quite gravel parking lot near the Abu Simbel temple, which we used to wait to take the ferry next day. For cars and bike with tents. Nice view next to the lake Nasser. +++The police told us we can camp here, however ask again, they will be friendly and there is a police station next to the temple so quite safe.+++ The parking is always empty and really big, we had a nice view on the lake and used it to swim or wash dishes. 2 min. walking to the temple. Also the port with the ferry to the Sudan road is really close. Toilets are close but you have to pay them.
To leave Egypt customs require a "certificate of no fines", well when shipping. It is said if you come from the south visa Sudan you must get it in Aswan, it's valid for only two weeks while you drive through the whole country and must be inside customs before the certificate expires. Egyptian bureaucratic logic. Kamel, the fixer in Aswan said it is possible to get it in Cairo or Alexander but I can't confirm. Otherwise you may need to contact a fixer in Aswan at cost to get the documents sent to you. Come early (9:00am) with a copy of your passport and a copy of that A5 card with stamps and stickers they gave you at the border when you got the vehicle license plates. Pay 10E£ and wait for the certificate. I have attached a photo of the entrance and the A4 document.
