acesses by a dirt track from the road, when nearing the coordinates, you will se a few tracks, follow them and you will reach a nice clearing. I doubt anything bigger than a 4x4 would fit down the forest tracks though!

Two big baddocks, surrounded by trees, near a small stream. One long drop toilet, fireplace, seating benches. Apparently, the place is maintained by somebody. At the time we visited, we were the only ones there and nobody came around to collect money. Can't guarantee this is a free site, though.

Some Spots Near Lake

Verified: 14 days ago
GPS: 54.169309, 24.428756
Alt.: 146.0 masl
There are a couple of camping spots around the lake. At the coordinates specified, there is one supposedly free site, which was taken when we arrived. Next to it, there are two lots, also adjacent to the lake, with phone numbers you're supposed to call when you intend to stay overnight. The phone number didn't work, however, a lady came around to collect 3€ for the night. Nice place overall, but kind of extreme with mosquitoes. Access is via a bumpy dirt/Forest road from Ziurai (turn left into the forest road at the first hamlet after Ziurai) or a slightly better one from Mergezeris (just turn into the next best forest road when you're just east of the place).

This is a paid site. There are many lots surrounded by trees and also a large free area. Wooden shelters as well as fireplaces are available. River with a small sand beach nearby. Long drop toilets. Price was (2017) €1,50 per vehicle, 1€ per person and 1€ per tent. Children are free. The friendly owner(?) comes by at some point to collect the fees.

Very beautiful spot in the woods at a river bend. A bit littered though. Aside from the main spot with a shelter, fire pit etc. there is another one a bit more down the path, which is less frequented by locals.

Beautiful site on a small peninsula in a lake, covered by forest. Nice and quiet. Long drop toilets were ... full at the time we visited, so bring a shovel. Access is by a narrow, winding path covered with protruding roots. Doable with a normal cars with decent clearance, but lowered vehicles and bigger rigs might struggle.

Camp site on a paddock with old apple trees. Provides a shelter, fireplace and long drop toilet. There's a small stream running across the property. There's a sign with a teleplone number written on it that you're supposed to call. The guy doesn't speak any English, so we texted him an Google-translated message, which worked well enough. He didn't even want any money from us.

Kernavė is the first capital of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania mentioned in historical chronicles (the second half of the 18th century). During these Days masters of ancient arts from Lithuania and neighbouring countries – boot makers, potters, glaziers, jewellers, blacksmiths, furriers, beekeepers and others show their skills and sell their products. During the festival a demonstration medieval fights and concerts of ethnic music are held.

Footbridge Across Širvena Lake

Verified: 3 days ago
GPS: 56.212910, 24.769290
Alt.: Unknown
Širvėna Lake is the oldest artificial water body in Lithuania. In 1575, it came into existence following the building of a dam across two rivers running through Biržai for protection of both the fortress and the city. Stretched over a swampy area of nearly 400 hectares, the pond reliably protected the castle and the city from the north. Nowadays, the area of Širvėna Lake is around 325 hectares. Following the establishment of a linen factory in buildings of Astravas Manor in 1928, a 525-metre-long and 2.45-metre-wide footbridge has been built over Širvėna Lake to connect the Astravas Manor and the city of Biržai. It is the longest footbridge across a lake in Lithuania. Today, the footbridge is very popular with anglers and newlyweds, local people and visitors. It is a great place to admire views of the city, savour the calm tranquillity of the lake, and take a stroll to Astravas Manor.

Several countries claim to be at the heart of Europe, but according to the research of the French National Geographic Institute, the one and only geographical central point of the continent is in Lithuania, a fact that has even won recognition in the Guinness Book of World Records. In 1989, a group of French scientists from the institute announced that the geographical centre of Europe was just to the north of the Lithuanian capital Vilnius – 26 kilometres to be exact – near the village of Purnuškės.
