Pooladkaf hotel, at Pooladkaf ski-resort

It's a 4* hotel at the Pooladkaf ski resort. It offers also sleeping in a yurt or in a traditional Nomad tent. You also can stay in your own tent. When we were here it was closed due of renovation and ramadan, but it opens in 8 days. At the campsite there are showers and toilets and a kitchen is coming. We stayed 3 nights on the grass in front of the hotel. We got the key from a room to take a shower. Toilets were open all night. Mr Ali is so amazing friendly and hospitable, he charged us nothing because of the renovation. From the campsite we did 2 days of hiking and one day the Margoon waterfall, really beautiful. The temperature is very good in this time of year, not to hot! First picture are the Nomad tents, second is our tent.

Chiclayo - Pandilla falsos mecánicos

GPS: -6.800380, -79.830340
Alt.: 8.2 masl
We were in transit when a van hit its right rear tire on the front left tire of our car. Around the corner a boy crossed the street like a pedestrian and told us that the tire looked like a mess. We followed a little more and 100m later another guy said something similar. It seemed like coincidence so I decided to stop to see what was happening. That guy came up and said that the wheel was off the steering wheel and that it should not go on without checking it. He also said that he was a mechanic and then put his hand behind the wheel and pulled out a rubber band and fastener that protects the steering terminal, both shattered. I was worried, although a little suspicious, I accompanied him to the next corner where another supposedly mechanical type appeared and then another who claimed to be the owner of the spare parts store next door. Then they reported a very expensive budget, I told them I did not want to do it at that time, so I was pressed all three, it was dangerous to keep the car. Having seen a Goodyear representative nearby, he was determined to take the car there. The boys realized that they would not perform the service, so they wanted to collect the "labor", they demanded 50 soles ... well, to summarize, it was all a simulation and the three were involved with that real theater. Goodyear confirmed that nothing was wrong. We were told that in that part there are some groups that come together to do that sort of thing, so stay tuned. P.S. If anyone wants or can translate into English, I appreciate it very much, so we will reach more informed Overlanders.

Amazing people working here, but they also deliver great work. They have parts and access to mechanicals and are very trustworthy. Doesn't matter what car, Land Rover, Toyota or Volkswagen, they will be able to fix it. Especially for Land Rovers they can get the parts easily: but for other cars they will help you no matter what. Where to get the parts, how you want to fix it, etc. The English and German is good and if this is your last stop before Russia, fix it here. Cheaper and more reliable than in Central Asia. If you are on your way back to Europe and you have problems: fix it here, cheaper than most other countries in Europe. They helped us perfectly, fixed many things (small and bigger issues) and it was cheap or actually the normal Latvian price. No ripping off: We can guarantee that. Say hi from David & Josephine

lovely little campsite in a man's front yard, no name, but you will see a sign saying 'camping and picking area'. owner is super friendly and the temperature is awesome after the heat of the rest of the area. facilities good and clean with a hot shower and lovely little covered area on the middle of the duck pond. good flat and shaded area, big enough for maybe 5-6 rigs, but nothing bigger than a panel van would fit through the gate. drinking water right out of the mountain, 200m from the town with little shops and a restaurant. plenty of hikes and waterfalls in the area. we negotiated the price for 2000 colones per person.

Bridge Toll booth

GPS: 6.281268, -57.536633

Mostly the toll is only payable on the east-bound route (ie towards Suriname) but BIG RIGS NOTE for large vehicles only, there is a payload toll on the west-bound route too. We're not entirely sure how it was calculated, but it involves the police officers checking the weights stated on your vehicle registration document and taking a weight reading on a weigh-bridge. We weigh 5.9T and were charged a tiny GYD120 (apparently for a unit of 1T). As we had just arrived from Suriname we had no money. Luckily the girl smiled and let us go this time for such a small amount, but for very big rigs the fee is likely to be a bit higher. May need some local money here.

This must surely be the most expensive ferry crossing in the world! If you can persuade them you are a 'car' it's GYD9,000. Small camper (under 4100lbs) = GYD14,000. Camper over 4100lbs = GYD22,000!!!! That's over US $100 for a river crossing of around 300m!!! (payment made is west-bound only). We tried to negotiate but they weren't interested. Needless to say... we didn't go. If, despite the cost, you still want to go, you can buy the ticket either at Western Union in Georgetown or on the boat when you get there.

Atta Lodge Canopy Walk

GPS: 4.244946, -58.905542

Pleasant wander through the jungle to a 30m high canopy walk through the tree-tops with a guide. We went in the middle of the day so didn't see much, but if you can time your drive to pass there either early morning or late afternoon (they recommend 06:00hrs and 17:00 hrs) it would probably be worthwhile. Unfortunately the lodge doesn't welcome overlanders parking-up for the night, so it's difficult to be there at the best times to see the critters. The guide was knowledgeable and did his best to find interesting things for us to see. It takes about 1 hr and is little over-priced at GYD5000, but that includes refreshments (tea, coffee, juice and home-made cookies) when you get back to the lodge. It's one of the few attractions to break up the loooong drive from Georgetown to Lethem.

This is just one of many many beautiful wildcamp spots to be found around the Rupununi. We picked here because it is very slightly higher ground and gives good around views for amazing sunsets, but you can park-up pretty much anywhere and have stunning scenery. If you are near a village you need to seek permission from the Tuschau (chief) but otherwise, just pick your spot. There are a few fresh-water streams & rivers around for water (some are nice for bathing) but otherwise no facilities. Free.
