Escape Mog Check-Ins

Date Place Comment
May 5th, 2021 Nps campground

This NP campground is located at Mile Post 22.1 when entering from the North end of the park. 160+ sites.

Also known as Mathews Arm Campground.

October 8th, 2020 CROWLEY RIDGE AREA

A small mowed area with a few picnic tables run by the Missouri Conservation group. 3 bars of Verizon 4G. 14 day limit.
A pleasant place to stop for a night.

September 30th, 2020 Kiowa Wildlife Management Area

Just a gravel parking area off a county road, but its quiet, except for the occasional train about .3 miles away. Nice boardwalk / deck that gets the evening sun. Keep it clean.

September 28th, 2020 Rest Area Independence Rock

Very nice rest area with dump station. Dump station is at North End of the rest area. Be sure to check out the Independence Rock historic site and short walk.

September 27th, 2020 Sheffield Creek, National Forest

Campground was still open and is currently free (sign is wrapped in plastic). Its end of season and gets very cold at night at 7,000ft elevation.

September 27th, 2020 Lander dump station and water

Dump Station is still open.
One of the most scenic dump stations ever! The views overlooking the city and the gorgeous mountains beyond are breathtaking. Thank you city of Lander.

September 23rd, 2020 South Tourist Campground

Dump station is still free. Two lanes. Drinking water as well. Thank you Idaho Falls.

September 20th, 2020 Mackay

The town of Mackay is an old mining town. The surrounding area is full of old mines and relics.
The town is VERY traveler friendly with free overnight parking, potable water and a dump station.
There are a few shops and diners that are all within walking distance.
We should all support towns like this. Overland travel would be so much easier if we all did.
Escapemog gives Mackay a 5 star thumbs up.

September 20th, 2020 BLM land near Craters of the Moon

As stated, just a pull off on the east side of a dirt road. No shade and mostly windy.
3 bars Verizon 4G.

September 16th, 2020 Kirkham Campground and Hotsprings

Due to recent gang activity the Campground is now a day use area only. Signs say Parking 7:00am to 9:00pm.
Rangers do patrol and enforce here.
Day use fee $5.00

September 12th, 2020 Lower Salmon Down by the River Camping

Large open area along the Salmon River. Suitable for all types of vehicles. There is almost no shade here. Very low highway noise compared to the sound of the river. One portapoti on site. 14 Day limit.
Thank you Idaho.

September 10th, 2020 Noxon Reservoir

Previous descriptions and directions are correct. Take first left dirt road after crossing over railroad tracks. Take smaller left dirt road up slight grade
Road was a bit overgrown, but we snuck our 12ft tall Unimog down it. Drive all the way to the end. Road will descend down to railroad tracks. Large open spot by edge of lake. Four trains overnight. No Verizon.

September 8th, 2020 Ruby Creek Road, Collville NF

As described. Easy dirt road for 2 miles. Large clearing. Great for solar. 4 bars Verizon 4G. Free range so watch for cows.

September 8th, 2020 Lake Gilette Campground

In a National Forest campground there is free potable water. Spigot does not have threads, so you will need to hold the hose onto the faucet.

September 7th, 2020 Republic city park

Spent the night here without any problems. Small well cared for park with space for about six vehicles parallel parked. Easy walk to grocery store 1 block to the south. Interesting little town.

September 3rd, 2020 Baker Lake Weather Station

Previous descriptions are accurate, but the initial approach to this site off the NF road is indeed tricky for ANY longer RV and I'd say all on-road trailers.
It has loose rocky traction and a steep approach angle.

September 2nd, 2020 Lonesome Cherry tree

Actually, not a bad site. It's a bit remote, and the road up is narrow and a little rough, but the site is big enough for a 30ft RV. Open skies for solar in the afternoons. 2 bars of Verizon 4G. Pretty nice view too. Escapemog approved.
P.S. The lone cherry tree is still doing fine.

September 1st, 2020 Rest stop off 101

Good place to park (and sleep) for the night. 8 hr max parking signs. This rest area is slightly off HWY 12, so there isn't a lot of drive through traffic at night. There is an area towards the back that RVs park that gets even less traffic.
Surprisingly quiet for rest area.

August 31st, 2020 Kalaloch Creek Site #3

Site is still here. No "No" signs. Not much sunshine for solar, but hey, it's a place to park for the night.

August 31st, 2020 NF - open clearing

Small clearing about 50 feet off NF road.
Flat and big enough for 2 - 3 rigs.

August 30th, 2020 Elma Rest Area

Three lanes of dump stations and potable water. Free!
Thank you state of WA.

August 26th, 2020 Mount Rainier and Valley view

VERY nice spot. A bit of a drive to get up here, but suitable for all but the biggest rigs. Great views of Mt. Ranier and the valley below. Good southern exposure for solar. Sun sets to the west in the valley making for great sunsets. 4 bars Verizon 4G LTE

August 25th, 2020 Hells Canyon

Basic NF campground. $14 / night.
Dumpsters.

August 25th, 2020 American River

On the west side of the bridge crossing the American River there is a road that leads down to this area. You might not be able to turn a trailer around down here, but everything else should be fine. Level areas for 2 or 3 cars / RV. 3 or 4 spots for tents. Small rocky beach area on the river. Shallow pool for swimming. No verizon cell coverage. No roaming either.

August 25th, 2020 Cedar Springs Campground, Wenatchee NF

Nice campground
$14 per night. Dumpsters.

August 18th, 2020 Windy Point CG

Potable water available. Faucet near site 8.

August 17th, 2020 South Fork Tieton Dispersed Camping

Just off HWY 12, on a parallel National Forest road, there is a large area by the side of the river with multiple flat areas. Shade and sun. Take Tieton Reservoir Road and then shortly thereafter take a right on NF-580. Clearings will be on your right. This large area has room for dozens of vehicles. Most sites have access to the river, which is flowing swiftly. No Verizon. One bar of roaming for text. Please help keep this area clean. Pack out some extra trash if you can.

August 15th, 2020 NF-1207 - large sunny area

There is a large flat pull through site off the NF road which could hold one or two big rigs. One entrance is better than the other, but the site is so large you can probably still turn around. Sunny spot good for solar. Existing fire ring. (There is currently a fire ban in effect.)

There are also many other smaller spots on the river side of the road suitable for tents. These are accessed on small roads that lead towards the river. Some of these sites will hold 2 - 3 cars.

No Verizon cell. One bar of roaming for text.

August 11th, 2020 Dog Lake CG

Located on the edge of Dog lake, this campground has about 10 sites. Boat launch and nice area down by the lake with very nice views. Pit toilets are provided but closed due to C-19. Picnic tables and flat spots suitable for RVs, trailers and tents. Please keep this (and places like it) clean or they threaten to close it.
Currently there is no charge.
No Verizon servive

August 9th, 2020 Former forest road - Iron Creek

There is a large open area about 100 feet to the west of NF 25. (I think this used to be the old paved roadway...) Can be accessed from the south off NF25. Plenty of room for several larger rigs. Large clearing gets sun most of the day. Gravel flat spots for tents. Large cement fire ring. Nice clearing. Let's keep it clean. No cell reception.
