November 26th, 2016 La Fresa

Not sure why this place is pinned, the empanadas were average at best and they only offered one type.

November 24th, 2016 Electrotito- electricidad Automotriz

Ask for Tito, he's the man. he'll fix you right up, super knowledgeable on all electronics but specializing in VWs. he has his own german 78 kombi and brasilia. Funny guy, speaks a little English but you'll figure it out. also friends with pato sigcha, so you can ask him as well.

October 11th, 2016 Hosteria Hacienda San Joaquin Cotopaxi

As described, separate camper area with hot showers, cooking facility, and you can use the inside fireplace area for relaxing. loved our time there but would warn that prices for meals in the hosteria are $7-8 for simple type meals found in town for $2, and a bottle of wine is $25.

October 11th, 2016 Automotor VW - Patto Sigcha Mecanico VW

Go nowhere else to fix your VW in quito, seriously. Patto is the man, has a wall of Kombi travelers stickers to his cred, loves talking and teaching, and while we were there saw his crew working on other kombis, beatles, and even a Thing. Clean shop, wifi, and a true part of the VW family.

October 11th, 2016 VW Parts Don Astu

Super friendly VW peeps, as expected with our folk! They had all parts we asked for (new crankshaft pulley, new CV boot, new gas pump, and new T2 air filter) but most were Brazilian make...which get the job done but will likely need replacing.

October 11th, 2016 VW Garage "Motor Studio”

A little tough to find and definitely not convenient if you're heading north or south and have more than a days work to do since there's nowhere to stay in this part of the city. Friendly guy, real Beatle fanatic, but ultimately he told us he was too busy and to come back two days in a row. We went instead to the VW guy in quito, Pato, and were treated as family and could not recommend him more for VW travelers.

October 1st, 2016 Camping Paraíso

happy to report it's open again and basically paradise. super friendly argie couple now running it, we're here now and loving it

September 30th, 2016 parking in front of kids game area

quiet, a few other over landers parked here as it's really the only place in town that's free and out of the way...but still central. other places were available, we reviewed them, but by and large they were expensive and not friendly. open wifi, bathrooms, good eats close by, climbing wall, and park right here.

September 30th, 2016 Backpacker Great Hostel

We tried this place tonight, despite all the negative reviews on overlander, and found that they don't allow "camping" anymore unless the entire place is full. Otherwise it's $18 per car, which is same as two beds in a dorm. The staff was extremely unpleasant, and rude to us despite the hostel being empty. we would recommend parking near the kids park, for free.

September 30th, 2016 other parking lot on kids park

A bunch of spaces on this side of the park, slow free wifi, good restaurants within walking distance, and free! we saw guards walking around as well.

September 21st, 2016 Parking for Podocarpus National Park

As described by others, just head into Zamora, go through roundabout and onto this semi paved road. it's rainy season now, the road is only slightly washed out in places, but was no problem in our heavy two wheel drive kombi. Park guards were friendly, and would recommend camping here, just be prepared for lots of mosquitoes.

September 13th, 2016 Costa Gas

Apparently open all days of the week, weekends too, and odd setup like all wholesale gas places in south america. we tried having our Chilean tank filled up to no avail, which is typical, but ended up buying a completely new peruvian 10kg tank for 128 soles.

September 12th, 2016 Swiss Wassi Zorritos

Well geez, without waxing too poetic about Swiss wassi, melba, jacque, dante, or guloso (their hairless Peruvian dog), we'll just say that we came to feel as family there and out of our travels in south America would make a special trip back to Peru just to see them again. all this, AND the beach paradise, cold beers, sea only feet away, campfires at night, watching humpbacks breach offshore, and catching and cooking fish we caught from the break right out front. A truly magical place, we loved this place and miss both jacque and melba.

August 31st, 2016 La Posada Nortena Hostel

After being turned away from Ecolodge Manita Helmita because a religious group had booked the whole place, we came here. Two couples in our group got matrimonials for 45 soles each couple and we parked in our Kombi out front for free. But I'd definitely offer at least 10 soles for use of the lobby bathroom. The owner almost didn't let us back in in the morning to use it (not a morning person? Short term memory?) saying we hadn't paid anything to stay so we couldn't use the bathroom. He charged us 5 soles to use it. There is a shower in the lobby bathroom too but we didn't use it so not sure how the water is or if he'd charge more for a shower. Road a little noisy at night. We had dinner at the restaurant next door, decent chicken Milanese with fries, rice, and simple salad for 15 soles.

August 15th, 2016 Puerto Inca Beach

Still here. Good spot on the way from/to Arequipa. We didn't talk to anyone at hotel, just drive down the turnoff from main road (dirt and washboard, not bad) and turned right before hitting parking lot. It's literally right next to the parking lot, same amenities (none), and free.

August 15th, 2016 Palermo Restaurant

Stopped in Ocuna for lunch, and lucky we chose this place as it was friggin delicious. 12 soles per person for meal consisting of typical but huge and delicious chupe de camarones, big portion of pescado con frijoles and rice, side salad and sweet tea for after. Awesome meal accompanied by day time soap operas on big screen.

July 16th, 2016 Square Combapate

Parked right across the street from the police station in the square, seems like a better option than the other spots down the road closer to puno. Not a ton going on in town, but cute nonetheless.

July 10th, 2016 Small Police Station parking

Police informed us the beach hill place was not safe and wanted us to follow them here and park overnight. which we did. kind of noisy but at least it was safe.

July 10th, 2016 Beach Or Hill By The Border

Yikes, we drove down to the beach first and explored, waited until the sunset and cooked with a fire right on the beach. Two police showed up and checked our vw kombi, licenses, passports and strongly recommended we leave because it was not safe and there were recently two robberies down there. we then decided to move up to the bluff above but were there for maybe 45 minutes before what seemed like an entire SWAT team showed up and banged on our windows. they also told us it was really not safe there and asked we followed them to the entrance of town where they have a little police stop, so we ended up sleeping there.

July 9th, 2016 Border Control Peru/Bolivia

Yes Yes to all things others have said: try not to cross crossing Fridays as its mayhem with the border streets, if you're crossing into Peru then sweet talk the Border guy on the other side to let to buy seguros in puno (if the Peru seguros offices are closed like on Saturdays and sundays), and they didn't look at our vehicle at all. IMPORTANT NOTE: we didn't realize this until crossing into Ecuador, but the Peruvian aduana gave my wife 90 days, gave our Vw bus 90 days, and gave me only 60 days. we all got stamped at the same time, and I can only surmise they did this to be able to extract a bribe later on...which they were did when we checked out at Ecuadorian border.

July 8th, 2016 Casa Skyways B&B

Do not stay here. expensive, filthy carpets, average wifi, rude host who changed check out time by an hour the morning we were leaving (literally interrupted breakfast) to tell us to leave an hour earlier despite quoting a different time yesterday. below average breakfast and just generally a crappy vibe all around. also, anyone with above average clearance won't be able to park in their private parking. avoid this place, not sure how they ever got a positive review.

July 8th, 2016 Stannum Hotel

On the luxury end but they do have private parking in a garage big enough for overland vehicles. About $100 per night, super nice rooms, breakfast, bar and all above a cinema and Cinnabon. not exactly local flavor but nice place to place to lay up before hitting the border

July 6th, 2016 Wild camp off the road on field edge

Pulled off the road after AyoAyo but before the next overland pin at the hotel gran poder. there's a sign for the right hand turn, we pulled off and drove up the dirt track a bit and parked in a small turnout on a fields edge for the night. A local lady walked by and asked a few questions but otherwise it's super quiet, if cold and at 12500 feet. we didn't want to enter la paz at night so it's a decent place to layup.

July 3rd, 2016 El Poncho Ecocenter

Seemingly a weekender destination for locals in the area, it's en ecocenter that offers cabanas and volunteering or just chilling out and enjoying the food they cook up for you. it's well out of town, but well worth it and has a great vibe. pool, food, bar, average wifi, showers, and bathrooms, but really great ambience and setting with awesome views from the main haven. Camping in our kombi, we paid 80bs pppn, including all meals. not a bad deal, but we usually cook ourselves, just be aware of that.

July 2nd, 2016 Las Lilas

Apparently a group of Mormons have reserved this place until the middle of August. We got here beginning of July, and they said the entire place, all rooms, all camping, all parking, etc are now reserved by the Mormons. You can't make this stuff up.

July 1st, 2016 Off access road under the bridge

Heading towards cochabamba, hang a right after the bridge and follow road past several houses and down under a second bridge. Ok spot, not too pretty, but certainly out of the way and fine to layover one night before heading to cochabamba. This spot is under the second bridge on your right from the main road, you'll see it when you go down the path, fine for everyone to make it.

June 27th, 2016 Ateneo Cafe Y Libreria

The other one is in the Casa Design Center complex at the 3er anillo interno and Avenida Busch, across from the IC Norte.

June 27th, 2016 Ateneo Cafe Y Libreria

Awesome bookstore and coffee shop. Great coffee, pastries (try the lemon cake!), and free wifi. Nice place to chill. This is one of two locations in Santa Cruz.

June 27th, 2016 Vardona Gas Station

Sold us gas at the foreigner price (which is the normal price of gas in the rest of South America) and also filled our gerrys (two 20 L gerrys and one 10 L gerry).
