Our Pangaea Check-Ins

Date Place Comment
May 15th, 2022 Caislean Oir Hotel

Large gravel carpark on water's edge opposite hotel. Lady at reception said there was no problem staying the night and we had heard others had done it. We also enjoyed dinner and live music in the bar. A beautiful setting to wake up to on the water.

May 13th, 2022 Kinnagoe Bay

Parking lot of spectacular beach hidden away on north shore of Ireland. Narrow winding road down to park, no facilities but locals told us people park up here all the time. Two other vehicles were here with us. Recommended.

May 11th, 2022 Ford's Farm

Small grassy paddock behind the farmer's house, power and water, toilet but no showers. Interesting place amongst the chickens and cows, a very friendly Farmer Ford as the host. We paid £18 for two people. Nice views over the lough. Very quiet and friendly but not fancy.

May 8th, 2022 Ty Mawr Myndd

As described, we paid GBP 10 for no power, beaut views of water. There's power and water but no toilet or shower. they gave us a small porta potty and tent for use on site.

May 7th, 2022 Monstay farmsite camping

Camp in flat open grassy paddocks behind working farm and barns. One set of toilets and showers. Great views over valley below, sheep in paddocks next door. Absolutely beautiful. It is GBP 18 for two people per night. Maybe a few powered sites as well. Bookable online. Recommended.

December 7th, 2021 Split Rock Dam

Lovely place to camp on the banks of a large dam. Many places to set up depending on the water level. we camped in an open area near the boat ramp at the end of the road. No facilities but there is a toilet at the picnic day use area on the way in.

March 4th, 2021 Six Mile Creek Campground

This camp-site is currently closed due to heavy fire damage. Nunnock campground is closest site open.

February 27th, 2021 Fletcher's Road

Large clearing on ridge in state forest on secondary road, formerly a site loggers piled wood. Worked great for us.

February 27th, 2021 Bombay Reserve

This site is now for day use only, no camping. But there is a minor track off the main road in the opposite direction that leads to a clearing and a good camping spot.

October 22nd, 2020 poncaarie Campsite

Yes, quite a few free places to camp on the river banks less than one km south of Pooncarie. No facilities.

June 28th, 2020 A bend in the Darling

Great place to camp on the high banks of the Darling. Follow well used track off road just north of a little bridge. Go back about 1 km to the river. Very quiet and still.

June 26th, 2020 Darling River campsite

Another great place to camp on the banks of the river. Follow dirt track off main road which weaves back to the river.

June 26th, 2020 Tilpa Weir

Multiple places to camp at Tilpa Weir. Follow clearly signposted track down to water. Picnic tables but that's it.

June 25th, 2020 Horseshoe bend of Darling River

Stunning spot to camp on Darling River. There's a faint dirt track to the left just before a cattle grid a couple of kms past the park's formal campground if you're coming from Wilcannia. Follow the track 3-4 kms along fence until you hit the river. A little effort but a huge reward.

June 18th, 2020 Wildcamp in the middle of cows Field!

We camped here last night, the only decent spot late in the afternoon coming from Ivanhoe. A beaut semi-desert setting all to ourselves.

June 17th, 2020 Banks of Lachlan River

Perfect spot on high banks of river off the gravel road called the Lachlan Valley Way following the river. Find dirt track into the trees, many spots to choose from. Plenty of firewood and crazy birdlife in the trees.

May 6th, 2019 Protea Karridene caravan park

We loved this place for it's big grassy pitches, great ablutions and cheap laundry. it was a perfect place to sort out our gear and pack up before shipping our truck from Durban. The rate is now R230 for 2 people per night but the wifi is free - available at the hotel or at the campsite. Recommended.

May 4th, 2019 The Jetty River Lodge

We pulled in to take a look and couldn't find anyone to talk to. They place looked okay from the front but we weren't sure it was still operating. I don't want to mark it as closed because it wasn't conclusive but we were skeptical.

May 4th, 2019 The Pont

Update for this place, same nice elderly woman and a very pleasant grassy campsite on the river with good ablutions, electricity and some mobile braais. Price is now R100 pppn, the best deal in town.

May 2nd, 2019 Jeffreys Bay Caravan Park

Update, they have now built a fence on the ocean side and still have the night watchman so much better now. we were charged R169 for two people 8car in low season. Great spot on the ocean, super hot showers!

April 24th, 2019 Cederberg Wilderness Area

The Cederberg Wilderness Area is an amazing place to visit but its unique arrangements can absorb time and money. There is only one place to camp in the park and that is at Algeria but you can camp just south of the park at Sanddrif (check in at Dwarsrivier Winery) or Cederberg Park at Kromrivier (where we camped). They are all crazy expensive, for instance at Kromrivier they asked for R520 for 2 people but agreed to 350. You also have to pay for individual walks and get permits which give you the combination to the locked gates. The Maltese Cross walk, for instance, costs R70 pp, the rock art is 50 pp (the price list says its R70pp to picnic!). You can enter the park from the south via Ceres or the north from Clanwilliam. There are no entry fees if you are just passing through. The third way in is off the N7 about 20 km south of Clanwilliam, follow signs for Algeria. This third way is the fastest in/out of the park from Cape Town. But it's all worth it - the park is stunningly beautiful!

April 24th, 2019 Kromrivier Cederberg Park

This is a stunningly beautiful valley with an exciting drive down into it. The campground is as described but please note their new rates are R520 for 2 people pn. We complained a bit and she graciously lowered it to 350. Still very high in our view despite the great facilities and views. They basically cater for the Cape Town weekend audience, not overlanders. There is free wifi at the reception.

April 22nd, 2019 Hardeveld Lodge

Great little place to camp on the way to or from somewhere. As described below but price is now R120 pppn. Cash only. Two camping spots with electricity.

April 18th, 2019 Witmuur sheltered Camping

We hunkered down here for the night, it seemed the best option to minimise the howling wind. Very calm in the morning and a beaut sunrise.

April 17th, 2019 Agate Beach

Informal camping with toilets, picnic tables and braii pits closely overlooking the beach. its windy of course but the spots up to the left have some protection and have the best views. We couldn't find anyone for info or to pay. A surprisingly good spot, quiet and with all the basics.

April 15th, 2019 Kries Rus

Official campsite in the park just off C14. Set next to dry creek bed with rare trees, very basic with only a drop toilet and some picnic tables spread out in individual pitches. You need a permit to camp here but if you go over the knoll to the last sites you will be our of site of the road. A very pleasant spot to spend the night.

April 14th, 2019 Dunlop Zone

They have an after hours and Sunday call out service for emergencies. call Pieter on 0811270623. Call out fee is N$500 plus labour. Don't expect smiles or conversation but they were very quick and efficient in fixing our tyres.

April 14th, 2019 Cape Cross Seal Reserve

This place is unique in that you can walk amongst thousands of seals with their pups and watch them in and around the water. Namibia charges high rates for these places, don't maintain them and you rarely get a smile but despite all that - and the overpowering smell - we really enjoyed the seals. This experience is rare in the world, for us despite it all definitely worth doing.

April 13th, 2019 Aabadi Mountain Camp

We pulled in here because the setting amongst the rocky mountains was beautiful, were warmly welcomed, had to insist on $N150 when he tried for 180. The camping sites were virtually unlimited, ablutions basic outdoor variety but clean and mostly functioning. There is electricity at one site which is solar/distant generator but you have to specifically ask for it. They brought firewood for us at no additional charge and fired up the donkey in the morning for warm showers. We loved the desert setting, all good.

April 13th, 2019 Cape Cross Lodge Campground

Update, as listed below but rate is now 140pppn, still reasonable given the good facilities and partial wind breaks. Note the generator for electricity is only on from 1800 to 2100 in the evening.
