Ubuntu Cafe

Beautiful and inspiring project, supporting local women and children. Cafe with delicious coffee and food, the perfect breakfast or lunch spot. Meet the ladies who sew shoes, bags and bracelets, of which supports their families. A must visit! And delicious take away coffee too with VERY clean bathrooms. Free WiFi

Tracey’s Guesthouse and Family restaurent

A lovely quiet guesthouse, rooms are nicely decorated, quiet, have AC, great hot showers. Restaurent food delicious- really nice home cooked food. Couldn’t recommend this place more if you need to stop over to/from Botswana border. R400 for a double room, ample safe parking.

Muchenje Campsite & Cottages

Wonderful campsite, we stayed in #10 and it had beautiful views over the linyanti floodplain. Very well appointed camp sites- braai stand, power, wash up area and bin. Showers were hot and a power shower- best we’ve had!! Can also buy supplies including meat, salads, wood, toiletries etc at their little shop. WiFi in the office- free. Perfectly situated for onward/inward travel between savuti & Chobe.

Aquarite

Good place to fill up all your water tanks with drinking water before heading into chobe/the Delta. They only accept Pula Cash.

Choppers Supermarket & ATM

Choppies supermarket and ATM to draw pula.

Mudpackers LA Sport

As below, Zambia’s main 4x4 overlanding/camping outlet. Workshop on site to fit equipment/ make repairs. Also sell books, water, charcoal etc. New butchery opening in Jan 2019- an awesome one stop shop for overlanders. Stock up here before heading north!

Kazungula border: Botswana - Zambia

One of the easiest borders we have crossed! Took an hour from start to finish. What a pleasure entering Botswana where you pay for TIP, road tax and insurance all in one go!

Fibwe Public Viewing Area

Fibwe public viewing area for the bat migration. A circular slashed grassy area with wooden benches. Free to use. Bat viewing at 4.30am and 5.30pm

Road Tax Office (Road Transport and Safety Office)

Open hours 8am-5pm. It is true that you can only pay for road tax in USD (USD20) which is ridiculous. Parking on site and easy to get to though.

Thorn Tree Guest House

Really great place to stop over, we stayed in our roof tent in the car park which was absolutely fine- power to plug in fridges and clean toilets next to the parking. Warm showers inside. Good food, cold beers and the bats are INCREDIBLE! Kw50pp camping. Delicious egg& bacon sandwiches and home made chicken pie for take away!

Mbala / Isopa Border Post

Exiting Tanzania, crossing into Zambia. Only 10 minutes on the Tanzanian side to hand in our TIP at customs and get our passport stamped. Managed to exchange some Tsh for Kwacha with local guys hanging around- couldn’t find any foreign exchanges prior to that point.

Entering Zambia, passport control and customs in the same room- TIP and Carbon Tax (Kw200) then passport stamps and done- finished in 20 minutes. Customs official said it would have been even faster with a Carnet! One thing you can’t get here is road tax- you have to go to the Road Transport and Safety Agency office in Kasama to get that- note they only accept USD!

Road Toll Point

Road toll point, can’t pass until you pay. Sign board says K20 per car but they wanted to charge us over k300 for being a foreign registered vehicle! Ended up paying K72 for “single access”. Don’t accept card, cash only (KW or USD)

CRDB Bank ATM

CRDB Bank ATM. Parking available. Long queues.

Kasulu Motel

Large well secured grounds in a quiet-ish area. They have en suite rooms which looked quite nice, but we camped in their grounds for TZS25,000 (1 Vehicle, 2 people). The toilets & shower are behind the restaurent- very basic but sufficient. Extremely friendly staff and great service- they would drinks to our camping spot! Restaurent on site too as well as free WIFI. A well located spot just before Kigoma, especially if you are wanting to bypass Kigoma and continue south.

NMB ATM

ATM in the town - most places in the area accept cash only.

Border Rwanda - Uganda

Relatively quick border crossing. No ATM, closest places to get cash is either Kigali or Kabali. No card payments possible at the border, cash only. No vehicle checks.

La Galette (German Bakery & Butchery)

Really great all in one Kigali stopping point- supermarket, bakery & butchery, all great quality. The restaurent is also fantastic, service really fast and you can order and shop while you wait for your food. Big portions! Highly recommend this spot. Safe parking outside privately held for La Galette. Watch out for all the one way roads in the area though!

Société Petrolière Kigali

Indeed this centre can fill every type of gas bottle, they even refilled our South African cadac!! However, it took much pleading for them to do so because apparently you have to go to their HQ offices in Kigali Centre to get an invoice FIRST then they will refill.... we managed to get them to agree to fill it and pay cash but it took a lot of persuading. 3kg has cost 3000UF.

Nshongi lodge and campsite

Rustic little lodge in the most incredible location, by far the best location of any lodge in Rushaga. You feel like you are right in the forest and amazing birding. No good for roof tents but worth taking a room for the beautiful location. Rustic huts USD38 pppn full board.

Nob Petrol Station

Cash only, and much more expensive than fort portal... but you do get a windscreen wash!

Queen Elizabeth Bush Camp

Nice stop over though a shame there is no camping. You can do bed and breakfast but no place to cook your own food so you have choice but to do full board! Updated prices, USD60 for a tent overlooking the river (basic but fine, shared ablutions, hot showers). Meals: USD3 for starters and desert, USD7 for main course lunch and USD15 for 3 course dinner. Good food.

Kluges Guest Farm

Everything as below, a must do! A birders paradise, beautiful walks in the surrounding forest. Off season rate is USD10pppn camping.

Kanyiyo Pabidi

Chimp trekking centre with dormitories (USD35pppn) and private rooms, restaurent and bar. No campsite but they let us camp in a quieter corner of the car park for USD8pppn. Could use dormitory toilet and (cold) showers. Can eat in the restaurent but have to book in advance. Chimp trekking USD95 pp, plus USD40pp for park entry (which you have to pay at the park gate). Heard chimps calling in the night! Manager Nick really nice and said they were looking into developing a proper campsite.

Kabalega Diner

Indeed an excellent stop for a break- nice clean bathrooms, quiet gardens, small curio shop.

Murchison Treehouse Lodge & Campsite

Beautiful lodge right on the shore of the river. Campsite set back with no view of the water but beautiful Restaurent and bar on the waters edge. USD12pppn camping, USD60-160 for rooms.

GHOMACOS Fruit and Vegetable Market

High quality fruit, veg & egg market funded by the Singita Grumeti Fund. Great place to stock up on fresh supplies before Serengeti. Open Mon & Wed 9am-1pm.

Harrieth View Hotel

Clean, basic hotel, with hot water & restaurant. Includes breakfast. Air conditioning & fridge in the room.

Fuel Station

First fuel station since leaving Shinyanga.

Road Update

Dirt to tar road after 15km of potholes. Not impassible, just slow. Coming from Shinyanga, it is initially 100km of excellent tar, then a 15km stretch of dirt before changing to tar again. Good road overall, they are working on tarring the whole way.

Lake Oil Fuel Station

Lake Oil Fuel Station along dirt road. Big diversion in the area where they are building a bridge.
