Date Place Comment
December 1st, 2012 Pousada Lacula

Camped at the terrain of Pousada Lacula. Owner Sylvain. His guesthouse has comfortable rooms and also offers place to hang your hammock.

November 1st, 2012 St. Amaro, Lençóis Maranhenses National Park

Lovely, quiet spot along the riverside

November 1st, 2012 Dunes between Barreirinhas and Paulino Neves

Fantastic area for rough camping with lots of solitude.

November 1st, 2012 Tatajuba- wild camp

Take the ferry from Camocin and follow the trails (or follow a local car/buggy) to Praia Selvajem. This is a couple kms from Lagoa da Torta where many tourists are taken for lunch (good fish restaurant, by the way). Praia Selvajem is a great kitesurfers beach, with a shop run by Kite World Wide to rent gear or take lessons.
Good place for rough camping. For an excellent dinner, or a splendid breakfast with home-made whole-grain bread, check out the Pousada Portal do Vento on top of the hill (make a reservation; owners are Sandra and Marcel).

November 1st, 2012 Lago Amarelas- waild camp

Good place for rough camping, but you can also follow the trail to the beach if your car is not so high as ours (we were stopped by too-low hanging cashew branches).

November 1st, 2012 Plaza of Alcântara

Lovely colonial village, beautifully restored. Next to the Prefeitura (on the right side when facing the building!) is a good place to spend the night. Don’t stay left of the building, down to that inviting, grassy spot a bit down, right along the waterfront– it’s one of thé places for tourists to get robbed, or so we were told.

September 1st, 2012 Viewpoint Pedra de Mirante

Nice hike up this viewpoint. Would be a great place to camp too, if your car gets up that steep sandy hill. Our Land Cruiser didn't (would have worked with deflated tires, but since we don't have a compressor we didn't want to do that). We camped nearby.
