Date Place Comment
July 31st, 2019 Ngoma Border crossing to Namibia

from the 1st May 2019 prices went up.
now 308 NAD for vehicles (3,5t).
payment by visa possible

July 28th, 2019 Road to Kasane direction

tour operators recommend and also take that road. you can go 40 to 50 km/h in some places. it is just around 10 km longer than the straight road. No low gear necessary

July 28th, 2019 Savuti Campsite

We did not like that campsite. Some of the sites are very close to each other. Ablutions were fine, one ablution block for the whole campsite what makes it a little bit far for some camping spots. There is a generator they turn on from 8 am to 7pm to have hot water. But that does not mean that the evening and night is quit, because the generator (we guess) of the place were the staff is staying stays on for the whole night.
Probably you can hear it from all camping spots. For us a no go when you drive that far up here and pay a lot of money to camp IN the park! They should switch to solar like other campsites in the parks do.

July 28th, 2019 Waterhole

waterhole with plenty of water even in dry season. just a short drive from the gate. good stop over for lunch

July 27th, 2019 Junction to avoid sandridge road

We read that the sandridge road leading down to kwai river is very sandy and you can get easily stuck...we tried that seasonal alternative and it was a very good option. In rany season probably not possible.

July 25th, 2019 Bush camp close to hippo pool

We bushcamped here because of the high prices for camping in that area. We stayed for sunset at the hippo pools and a lot of safari vehicles where around. After they left we picked this spot. Hidden of the main tracks. At the beginning we were a little bit confused because you saw in the distance some vehicle driving around. May be they did night drives. Our place was perfect, quit niht. Better don't pic a place close to the main tracks.
Lots of wildlife around :-)

July 21st, 2019 Morutsa Gate

If you are starting from Morutsa or Ditshiping you have to pass this gate. It is open from 6 am to 10 pm.
Morutsa starting point is directly when you turn left. Ditshiping is aproximately 10 km further.
The gate is like a veterenary check. Beyonce this point cattle is not allowed. No checking of food.

July 21st, 2019 Ditshipiing Mokoro Starting point

We did 2 days one night. Booked one day before in Maun in OKMT. You can talk about your itenary with the guide. Normally they do 1.5 hours Mokoro, break until 4:30 pm and walking safari until sunset. After breakfast the nwxt day they do walking safari, break, and come back with the Mokoro within one hour.
We asked for having a Mokoro ride in the morning about 1,5 hours (there and back) combined with a shorter walking safari which was perfect. Try to get a mix of Mokoro and walking because you can see a lot while walking and it is so nice to do safari without any engine noise and to stretch your legs after all the driving!
In the breaks we tried to use the Mokoro by ourselves which was fun.

July 21st, 2019 Mochaba Crossing - Turn off for Ditshiping and Morutsa starting points

here you have to turn left coming from Maun to reach the Starting points for Mokoro Trips. 4 x 4 recommended

July 21st, 2019 Ditshipiing Mokoro Starting point

here you can start a mokoro trip. This year the water level was low. Because of this we choose that start. It is the deepest point in okavango where you can start a tour

July 18th, 2019 Entrance Makgadikgadi Pans GR

Entrance Ticket for Makgadikgadi and Nxai Park are combined.
You can visit both parks with the same ticket.

July 17th, 2019 Nxai Pans South Camp

stayed one night. we preferred the area of campground 8,9,10. Seemed to be more private. we stayed on 10 which was great because right and left of the campsite are elephant paths behind the trees. They like to head to the ablutions to drink the dump water. Minus: not much shade which was ok because we just stayed one night.
25 $ for SA
38 $ other nationalities
warm showers

July 15th, 2019 River Crossing

at this time of the year you don't have to take the ferry. when you turn left there is a path that leads you to the other side. no need to go through th water.

July 15th, 2019 Next to road

We had a very quit night. We did not stay exactly on this spot but close by. We did a campfire in the evening and took it easy in the morning, nobody was there.
On the road you can find plenty lovely spots for wild camping and are able to drive a little bit further in the bush to be hidden by big trees.
Recommended!

July 13th, 2019 Kalahari N.P. - CKWIL-08 - Kukana

Really nice campsite. Not much visible wildlife around in that area.
It was the only free spot for our third night in the central Kalahari. 15 -20 min drive back to the junction for game loops. Road is ok, you can go with 40 km/h.

July 12th, 2019 Pipers Pan Campground No. 1

It is nice to be in the middle of central kalahari just with a second other campsite. As metiond you have to stay in the driveway to have a view on the pan.
We had a great stay. Lots of animals in that area and good views because there is no dense vegetation around. The waterhole is around 3 km away of the camping place.
But...to be honest....
international tourist pay 350 ppn per night to stay here. SA pay less but don't know the prices. A little bit disappointing because there is not even a proper brai place...
We don't want to have luxury in the wild but 350 is way overpriced and it feels again like a rip of for International tourist. Why is everybody thinking that 700 (60$) is not much for us!!!
This pan was still not to be missed for us and if you don't want to rush through these two camsites are the only ones in that area....don't think about the money ;-)

July 11th, 2019 Border to CKNR

Here starts the NP. Behind this point wild camping is not allowed any more.So check before or there is a junction where you might find a wild camping spot around here. We did not check because we had a booking for Xade. We saw almost nobody on the way.

July 11th, 2019 Thakadu Camp

Camping, bar and ablutions (hot shower just in one ablution block) are ok. (everything more picey)
We wanted to try that recommended food
and had dinner. Mains are around 120 to 200. Impala curry and Kudu Seeswa was our choice. The curry was nice (like beef) but the other dish was too dry.
But in total we would not stay again or recommend this place.
We asked the evening before if it is possible to do a laundry with washing mashine before going to the central kalahari. The staff made two phone calls, confirmed and promised that we can bring our laundry at 8 am. So we planned like that.
When we came in the morning the same guy told us that the owner/ manager? said now no.
When we talked to the owner she said: "Yes we have a washing machine but you can not use our facilities." She was very rude when we told that the evening before it was told to us different. On top she said that we can wash may be at the home of the staff who made the mistake. It is his fault and we have to figure out with him.
Very unprofessional and in that situation you could act in a different way.
We think there are nicer people in that area or better camp wild!

July 11th, 2019 Xade Campsite

Of the campsite close to the gate this one is the best. You still hear slightly the generator. A plus is definetly the waterhole around 3 km back. White powderd elephants will visit that waterhole and beautiful sunset. Perfect for the afternoon :-)

July 10th, 2019 DWNP Office Ghanzi

We booked the goverment campsites here as well. Don't forget to ask for your booking number. It happen that they do double bookings. You can pay with credit card or cash (atm is at spar grocery store)
open 7:30 to 16:30 (but they stop working 20 min before :-))

July 9th, 2019 Sefalana shopping center

supermarkt with vegetables, cheese, meat etc.

July 6th, 2019 Desert bush camp

Just pull of the road where the sand is not too deep and enjoy the silence, you can just camp everywhere.
no mobile service.
The road leads you to the Mabusehube Gate. We pulled of the tarroad in Makopong. There is a sign for the Transfontier Park. Road is just sandy 100 km. On maps me it shows the track going north but it dissapears on the map.

Update after driving the whole way:
We are not sure where we made the mistake, but we recognised that we missed the trail when we meet 3 guys on a "farm". They couldn't speak english but directed us the right way back to the real track. The beginning was a road but than it dissapeared. Check before going here!

July 5th, 2019 Darryl se Dienssentrum

Good reliable mechanic. We did a service check and renewed our break pads (Landrover Defender)

July 3rd, 2019 Chain ladder Hike

Really nice hike on the top of the Amphitheater

July 1st, 2019 Didima Camp

Really nice chalets in this place but looks very expensive.
But you can come as a day visitor for hiking.
with wild card it is for free.
Dont know the rates for day visitors.
There used to be a campsite but it is closed.
The receptionist said they are working on it...
We did Rainbow Gorge hike ( 3 hours)

June 29th, 2019 Bafokeng Guest House

Good budget option in town. They had just one single room left. For 2 people 350 without breakfast. Heater and lots of blankets in the room. Hot shower 24 h and TV.Small room but bed big enough for two. Don't know the rates of a double room. We could use the staff kitchen to prepare our own dinner.
It is basic but very clean.
Parking in front of the house with watchman.
Good option after or before Sani Pass.

June 28th, 2019 Afri Ski

They charge 50 ppn for day visitors, even when you just want to drink a hot choclate or have lunch in the restaurant there!
On top they don't allow you to go by yourself to the reception to ask for accomadation or have a look on the rooms. They bloc you at the gate and want you to pay first entry and then go to the reception! You will get a refund when you stay overnight but for us not welcoming to guests!
Bad policy! We did not stay!!! Better to spend your money in a small local guest house or restaurant!

June 28th, 2019 Shoprite

One of very few big supermarkets in the country.
We could also change our leshoto money here before heading back to southafrica

June 27th, 2019 Sisters of Charity B&B

heater and heating blanket
