David Atacama Check-Ins

Date Place Comment
December 28th, 2019 Quinchao

Really quiet. Some kids, some cars, not much more...
No WiFi from School today.
4G from Entel.

December 27th, 2019 Beachside

Did not stay, just wanted to add a couple of pictures.
Good 3G from Entel.

December 27th, 2019 Lavandería Thieck’s

Small Laundromat right next to the well known Frutillar Theatre.
Summer: 9am - 7pm
Clean and dry (3Kg minimum), $2.500/Kg (so, $7.500 minimum).

December 27th, 2019 Beach Camping

Good 3G/4G reception from Entel.
No trash around at this point, place looks really clean.
No facilities.

December 7th, 2019 Restaurante Hotel Farellones

Cosy family-run restaurant in Farellones, great food and magnificent view over Santiago (if there isn’t pollution). Very quiet in Summer. During ski season might be busy. Good food selection, fast service. It’s not really cheap, but this is a touristic place, far away from Santiago, there isn’t any other proper restaurant around...

September 13th, 2019 Centro Andrónico Luksic Abaroa

Museo del Cobre (Copper Museum). It explains the history of Copper mining in Chile for the last 100 years, the mining process, and the history of Minera Pelambres (briefly). All in Spanish. Many screens, videos and explanations for those who also like to read...

September 11th, 2019 RN Las Chinchillas

Very dry place nect to abandoned Mine and rail track, 300m before small 20-house town Hacienda Chinchilla. No facilities. 100m away from road. This is a secondary road, so no much traffic at all all day long. This is a Reserva Natural, so pets might not be allowed. No Internet coverage on local ENTEL provider.

September 10th, 2019 A nice place down by the River

This place is permanently closed.

September 10th, 2019 Dry area with high bushes/trees.

Driving north on E37, turn right to Las Palmas/Frutillar, on a downhill road. After a few hundred meters, you’ll find the enteance to a dry area with some trees around, and high bushes, enough to hide your vehicle from the road. Many places to choose from, the further you drive away from the road. No Internet on local Entel provider. No water and not exceptional view, thus only 3 Stars.

September 9th, 2019 Very dry area 100m off the road.

Going uphill to Alicahue you’ll find many suitable secluded spots for cars, tents, bikes, many tracks leaving the main road right and left. It’s fine to come here on a 2WD if it’s dry!, if it’s wet it will become muddy, so you’ll be in trouble. No facilities, no water, no Internet on local ENTEL provider. Cars and small campers will get here without a doubt, big rigs might need to find another spot nearby. Main road is dry unpaved so no traffic at night. Many fire pits around this area, probably locals come here on weekends.

June 4th, 2019 Falun Mine Museum - UNESCO World Heritage Site

Well organised Museum. You can spend hours doing the underground tour, walking around the big open air mine, visiting the museum on the main building, having a snack at the restaurant...
Bring warm clothes and rugged shoes...
(Note: this check-in was created on September 2019)

April 24th, 2019 free camping at base of mountain near Banos Morales

On the other side of the valley there is the Mine headquarters, so some noise is to be expected, at least until midnight and from 6am... Bright Lights as well! Nice view, to the end of the valley, but not breathtaking. No cell connection on local Entel carrier.

March 28th, 2019 Old abandoned chilean Border Control

A dozen steel containers, old and empty, abandoned around 2014 when border control officers moved to the argentinian side. Now they all share the same building. Good protection from wind, even for cars. There is nothing left from the immigration officers: all is empty. Amazing star gazing spot... Beware of high altitude! No Internet from local Chilean Entel.

March 22nd, 2019 RN Laguna del Diamante

‘Zona de Acampe’ - Camping Area. Bathrooms 200m away, next to a Police Post - Gendarmeria. There is always someone there, day and night. Amazing scenery. Beware of high altitude though!

March 21st, 2019 Final Valle Sosneado

Beautiful scenery by the river, impressing mountains around, 6km further from abandoned Hotel Sosneado. Just keep driving. No local reception on Claro Arg. Water nearby. Huge camping ground, many RVs would fit if they arrive here. From Hotel Sosneado there is a couple of narrow spots...

January 7th, 2019 La Lomita

Nice rooms with private bath. Queen + single beds, TV... $22.000 one person, including breakfast. Other rooms (with shared bathroom) are very basic... The woman said she would ask one of the workers to move to another room and share with a colleague, so I could have the room for me alone... $12.000 including breakfast. I stayed on the nicer room.

January 7th, 2019 Hospedaje janito

The owner offered me a room with two beds for $12.000, but told me I would need to share if someone else arrived. Or pay the whole room, $24.000... I did not stay...

January 5th, 2019 San Lorenzo Camping

Very beautiful scenery. Not for 2WD, in my opinion. Nice warm shelter where you can cook and stay warm and dry. Unfortunately no warm shower for me: pipes broke last winter, they told me. If cycling/hiking you can avoid the river crossing by riding/walking 1Km loop and crossing a scary wooden bridge...

January 4th, 2019 Amazing Wild Camp- Hikers and bikers only

Next to the river, next to a ‘arrieros’ hut, plenty of trees, all grassy, good protection from wind. Incredible view from the left side of Calluqueo Glacier and the peak above. Further East there is another glacier. 70m from river. 3.4Km after the end of the road. Last 3.4Km on a walking path, 95% can be done on a touring bike. Hikers and bikers only. No Internet on local ENTEL.

January 3rd, 2019 Restaurante El Mirador

They brew their own beer.
For lunch they offered grilled ‘congrio’, grilled veal and grilled chicken breast, with some vegetables, roasted potatoes or rice with mushrooms. They offered a mix salad as well. All looks clean, nice view on the bay... Everything was really tasty! The self made ‘calafate’ juice, amazing!

January 3rd, 2019 La isla

Anazing lamb! All home made food, few dishes (lamb, salmon, pork chops...) all cooked patagonian style with a few side dishes to chose from. Delicious! Extremely good value for money. Owner very friendly.

December 30th, 2018 Candelario

It really amazes me how people complain about prices... If you can’t pay $500 for a home made bread roll, stay home or stay in Santiago: you’ll find lots of cheap stuff there! Candelario Mancilla is isolated, supplied only once or twice a week by a boat if weather is good (90min ride); Villa O’Highins is also expensive because is 230Km away from the next town, on a dirt road and a ferry crossing; and still, Cochrane is not cheap either because is just in the middle of the Carretera Austral, with limited suppplies, 550Km away (450Km of dirt road) from the next big city! How much does a bloody Moccachino with Almond flavour cost in a Starbucks?
Yeah, rooms are not the nicest, they are fine! Furthermore, having a camping in the middle of nowhere with a barn where you can heat up and cook and stay dry, and a warm shower, even if it’s not the cleanest around, it’s pretty amazing! Don’t like the prices, bring your own food! I don’t like the prices in Manhattan either!

December 29th, 2018 Punte Norte - Lago del Desierto

Make sure you pitch your tent properly! It can be extremely windy! Nice views if it’s not cloudy and rainy... In that case, you won’t see a thing... :( Many horses around, so you know what you’ll find in the camping area...

December 26th, 2018 Los Leones - Restaurant, Confiteria, Comida Rapida

Good Paninni. The presentation is a bit simple... Just the white Paninni on a white plate, nothing else... A slice of tomato to give some colour? 30g of lettuce maybe? 3 olives? A slice of zucchini? It did not feel like a dinner dish but like a breakfast snack... Taste was good though... Chicken with mushrooms was really good!

December 25th, 2018 Bushcamp

I would also try with a 2WD. Pitched my tent at the very end, very rocky, but thousands of rocks to help keep the tent and vents steady overnight. Nice view over the mountain/glacier above.

December 24th, 2018 Río Vargas

Nice place but dirty surroundings and not much tent friendly... There is pretty much just one place to pitch the tent, full of sawdust... Water was probably fine, I drank it, but there are some houses around... I had to stay because it was dark and I am on a bicycle... Good 3G from ENTEL.

December 20th, 2018 Doña Dora

Nice clean bathroom with hot showers, plenty of space, 1.000 cars would fit in if needed, so you’ll never feel overcrowded! All grassy and no stones, perfect, very well maintained! Paid $5.000 for one person on a bicycle. 3G reception from local ENTEL only.

December 17th, 2018 Lavanderia Monte Austral

Fast (24h for me, I had no rush, they might do it faster if needed), and reasonably priced. They even fold it for you. Perfect choice for anyone.

December 16th, 2018 Mañihuales Hostel

Paid $13.000 for a room upstairs, with a bed and a bunk bed; did not take breakfast ($2.000). Bicycle could easily fit on backyard cover.

December 12th, 2018 Hospedaje El Mate

Very nice hostel! Single person on a 2-bed room with private bath, all very new, including breakfast, for $15.000. Nice dinner as well! One of the best in Carretera Austral! Extremely good value for money... Very friendly owner.
