March 14th, 2016 Receita Federal (aduana)

Customs control at the border. IMPORTANT! Since mid-December 2015 Brazil reintroduced TIP/TECAT (Termo de Concessao de Admissao Temporaria). It is valid as long as your visa. If you don't get the TIP here you have to get it in Caceres.

March 14th, 2016 Receita Federal (aduana)

Location of in-town aduana office. Get your TIP/TECAT here if you did not get it on the border. It is open Mon - Sat, 8 - 12:30 and 15-17:30.

March 13th, 2016 San Matías Aduana

Open 7 days a week between 9 am and 12:30 pm and 15:30 - 19:00. It is locaced close to the main road leading out of town, but on the road itself, so of you need to skip the aduana it is a good entry point.

March 13th, 2016 Municipial recreational park

March 12th, 2016 Surtidor San Ignacio

March 10th, 2016 River crossing now bridge open

We crossed when the water level was low (but for us looked high, just as the current seemed faaaast) and drive in and out was easy. The price for a 4x4 is 130-150bs, 40-50bs for moto. We paid 20L of gasoline (=74bs) + 20bs.

March 10th, 2016 Servicentro

Sells gas at local prices, but only 40L (to buy more you need bolivian id). May need to talk a bit before they agree. Only jerry cans.

March 10th, 2016 Capitania del Puerto Villarroel

Ask here if you are looking for a boat heading North (e.g. to Trinidad). It is relatively easy to find a passanger boat, but when it comes to cars it ia another story. We were told that between January and March 2016 not even one ship arrived, which could take them, so one would need luck to get anywhere.

Next to the capitania there is the port, where for 150bs they will load a 4x4 on a ship, once you have the documents from the capitania.

March 10th, 2016 Aventuras Extremas 4X4

Marking as closed.

March 9th, 2016 San Martin Gas

Sold us gasoline for local price, but would only fill jerry cans.

March 7th, 2016 Sandy camp

Wild camp among wild grasses and yellow flowers, some 300m from the artificial lake. Lots of sand, close to a dirt road with almost no traffic.

March 6th, 2016 Uyuni Train Graveyard

Best place to wild camp in town thanks to wind protected rooms where during the day cholitas sell turisty stuff. Clean and quiet. Spent 3 nights there. Tours usualy come to visit the place between 7:30 and 8 am.

March 6th, 2016 DG Gas

Bought 130L of gasoline for 5.5 BOB per liter.

March 5th, 2016 Pizzeria Milan

March 5th, 2016 Duchas paraiso

March 3rd, 2016 El Tatio Geysers

We reached the geysers at 5 am (a bit too earily as the sunrise was at 7:30) and even though there was light in the control station nobody came out, so we continued towards the geysers without buying the tickets. Nobody checked anything when we left at 9.

March 3rd, 2016 Border crossing Chile-Bolivia

Be aware that sometimes this aduana is closed and you have to go to aduana in Apacheta close to Sol de Manana geyser field. Be also aware that you might have bad luck like we did and pass aduaneros (who are going to Hito Cajones!) without knowing it!

March 1st, 2016 Behind the rock

Big and quite level spot behind the rocks, some 300m from the road. 4x4 required as the ground is sandy. Wind protected.

February 29th, 2016 By a red cliff

Very pleasent place just below a red sandstone cliff. Big flat place to camp and pitch tents. River is nearby but water is full of sand. To get there cross the bridge and then take a turn left after 100m into a barely visible dirt track and cross a gate.

February 29th, 2016 Taller Mecanico de Victor

Senor Victor helped us to diagnose electrical problems with A/C (300 pesos for 1 hour of work). His workshop is very clean, orderly and tidy. We could use his tools for free to do some other work by ourselves. Victor is a reasonable guy, who seems to know what he is doing. Recommended. Open 8-12:30 & 16-20:30. Only Spanish.

February 29th, 2016 In a canyon

Great possible place to camp if it is not going to rain as the place is a beginning of a narrow canyon (40m high walls), which is also a sesonal riverbed. 4x4 recommended due to sand.
