February 29th, 2016 In a canyon

Great possible place to camp if it is not going to rain as the place is a beginning of a narrow canyon (40m high walls), which is also a sesonal riverbed. 4x4 recommended due to sand.

February 28th, 2016 el Hornito

Great empanadas! 60 pesos for ones with meat and potatos. Beware that it might open late, when we were there it opened at 9 pm at Sunday.

February 26th, 2016 YPF with HOT showers

Last YPF when heading North with considerably cheaper fuel. Super (RON 95) cost 11.09 peso. Really hot showers for 15 pesos.

February 26th, 2016 NO CAMPING

Flat spot among the shrub, 500m from the main road. Windy in the morning. High posssibility of being spotted from the road. Camping here is probably illegal.

February 25th, 2016 In a sandy valley

Small flatish place 3km from RN3 where one can pitch 2-3 temts and spend a night. To get in ine has to open a gate and drive in the South Western direction. No traffic at night although the dirt tracks nearby seem to be public roads.

February 17th, 2016 Camping Lago Blanco

beautiful and level. plenty of space.

February 16th, 2016 Abandoned house

A set of three partly finished wooden houses, which seem to be long deserted. There are some debris inside and most windows are broken. Still a good shelter from the wind. No permanent neighbours nearby although locked houses are present here and there. Tent camping possible only inside the houses.

February 16th, 2016 SENASA El Calafate

Exportation paper for Chile. You need certificado de salud not older than 10 days, rabies vaccinacion certificate and proof of deparasitacion not older than 30 days. The export permit costs 32 pesos. Open between 8 and 13. Can pay with debit/credit card.

February 6th, 2016 River Camp

CLOSED! Somebody dug a 2m deep ditch across the road. No way to cross it, but the spot looked great!

January 30th, 2016 among great rock formations. beautiful!

we took the dirt track and followed it until we found this spot. the gate was closed but we opened it and drive in. use gps coordinations and follow the road a bit more.
you will find flat spot on your left. calm. no flies. no wind. small stream very close.

January 29th, 2016 Hermosos paisajes en Caviahue y sus alrededores

Very picturesque provincial park of Copahue with hot springs, active volcano and some waterfalls. Rio Agrio with orange rocks in the riverbed (contains iron) and blue and turquoise water is a lovely sight. Free entrance.

January 26th, 2016 Roadside rocking

Very basic wild camp by a private bridge, on the opposite end of dirt track than the hot springs. No traffic noise at night, but also a no thrill place. The road further west was closed at night.

January 25th, 2016 Nice free spot in reserva natural villavicencio

From road RP52 take a dirt track right. Go few km until a wooden sign on the left side (the sign says no open fire, name of the reserva and sth else). We camped behind this sign because the place was hidden. Very calm. We were there with one car and two tents. Two cars passed by night. Great, quiet, spot for smal and medium 4x4. Big rigs will not fit.

January 25th, 2016 Senasa

We had more luck and were able to secure the certificate after 11 am.

January 23rd, 2016 Flat viewpoint

Nice place with lots of space for a few cars or tents. Great views over the mountains in the eastern direction (the sunrise!). To access the place you follow a dirt track from the pass and then climb a small rocky ledge (20 cm height?). and arrive on the platform. Beautiful spot.

January 19th, 2016 Another swimming spot

Swimming spot on Rio Yuspe popular with locals (especially in the afternoon). Possible to stay overnight. The only drawback are trashes close to parking area. Also closeby there is a parador with camping and food.

January 18th, 2016 In the green sierras

Small flat place on a side of a dirt road, 20 meters from a small.bridge over a stream. Nice views. Enough place for 2 cars (tight), car and a tent or one RV.

January 18th, 2016 Nice swim in a river

Good place to swim or wash yourself in a river. Water was warm (24-26*C?) and appeared clean. There are at least 2 artificial small dams, which create waist/chest deep pools. Popular with locals in the afternoon. Setting is nice with boulders and rocks in the riverbed.

January 16th, 2016 In canon del ocra

Flatish place by a dirt track. Yellow (ochre) river nearby. With fireplace and small table. Has place for one tent, but the ground is rocky.

January 12th, 2016 Camping Don Chochita

Nicely shaded camping with electricity at sites and hot showers. Amazing price of only 50 pesos per car ($4!). If you pitch a tent the price is 100 pesos per tent. The only drawback of the place is location by the main road, which has some traffic. Wifi will be available shortly (when we were there the owner was waiting for the telecom company to install it). Pet friendly! (although there are 2-3 dogs here, they are calm)

January 10th, 2016 (Sir Henry’s Castle) Refugio on RN60 in Pastos Largos

Update: changed the name as this place is 100km from Paso San Francisco. This also where you take a turn leading to Volcano Pissis base camp (90 km) - if you continue pass it you reach a junction with RN 76, from which both Paso Pircas Negras (Chilean border) and Bonete Chico base camp are close.

January 10th, 2016 By a small salar

One of the most beautiful places we've slept during one year long trip. Great views of nearby Volcano Incahuasi (66xx m) and San Francisco (6018 m). A bit windy. High possibility of being harassed by wild vicunas in the morning.

January 8th, 2016 Next to Laguna Santa Rosa

200m from the lagoon and Refugio Santa Rosa (free, but occupied when we were there). Vis a vis Nevado Tres Cruces. Great views in the morning. Supposedly it costs 4000 pesos per car to overnight, but nobody showed up to collect anything. It was a bit windy in the evening, but nothing like in SW Bolivia or Salar de Uyuni.

January 5th, 2016 Mall Plaza Copiapo - big hipermarket

You can do your groceries here in Tottus. Contrary to the nearby Lider (Walmart), which has only underground parking (2 meters height limit), here you can park outside and for free. Good choice of products.

January 5th, 2016 El Eden

5000 pesos per person. Nice green areas with a bit of shade. We didn't stay here, just had a snack next to it.

January 5th, 2016 SAG

Servicio Agricola y Ganador, which is a place where you get an export permit (tramite de exportacion) for your dog/cat/parrot. It costs 6300 pesos. SAG is open from 9 to 14, Monday to Friday. If you deliver the papers in the morning, you should have them ready in the afternoon, otherwise next day in the morning. You need health cerificate (with info about vaccs and deparasitacion) and rabies vacc cerificate.

January 4th, 2016 Ugly emergency site

Good only if you need to stay close to Copiapo and there is no alternative. Ugly surroundings with some trash, mines and quaries nearby, very little road noise.

January 4th, 2016 Car parking

The cheapest parking we could find close to the center. Has some shade. 500 pesos per hour.

January 4th, 2016 Internet Cafe Mundo PC

Average connection speed, but better than nothing as internet access is scarce in Copiapo. 600 pesos per hour.

January 4th, 2016 Veterinary Clinica Santa Marta

You can get certificado zoo-sanitario for your dog here, necessary to enter Argentina. Price: 8000 pesos.
