Crossing from Belize to Guatemala. Smoother crossing than into Mexico or Belize. Process:
Drive through fumigation
Park on left and get out
Go to outside window on right after fumigation and pay for fumigation: 17Q
Enter building
Go to person on right to record vaccine info. Our five-year-old is not vaccinated and didn’t need to do anything. (We’re not sure of the test process if you aren’t vaccinated.)
Fill out visa forms for adults
Go to window to get passports stamped
Go to Aduanas window
Need passport and license of driver, vehicle title, and photocopies of all. In the passport, both the face page AND Guatemala stamp need to be photocopied. There is a copy shop nearby that opens at 8 a.m. (Tuesday).
Aduana agent walks outside to see vehicle. He asked if we had anything for resale, but didn’t ask about fruit or any food.
Bank on-site doesn’t open until 8, so we walked to a pharmacy to pay for TIP. (Feel free to reach out on social media if you need directions.)
Cost is normally 160 TIP, but we paid 173 Q with pharmacy fees (5 Q service charge and credit card surcharge).
Returned to Aduanas to receive TIP document
Done!

First night in Guatemala after stopping to swim at Lago Petén Itzá. SO hot this week. Recent reviews are accurate, no surprises. Paid 100 Q for two adults/1 child. No hot water for showers, but we didn’t need it. Weird electricity stuff here. For example, no blended margaritas before 6 p.m. because the generator doesn’t go on until then. Speaking of the generator that is mentioned in other reviews, we couldn’t hear it at all. It was a quiet night other than animal noises. There is WiFi, but it is very slow and unreliable. I wouldn’t count on it. Everyone was friendly. We had a dinner and breakfast at the restaurant. Best feature is easy access to Tikal in the morning. We were able to walk over around 6:30 before the heat and crowds kicked in. We didn’t see another person until we got to the first plaza.

Most sites are pretty exposed, but the far end site is nestled into the trees. Just watch out for the stream bordering it. Plenty of eagles in the area. Fire pits, a clean pit toilet, awesome views.

Beautiful campsite in Mariental. Super clean ablutions, hot showers. Various animals in grounds, rabbits, sheep, camel, springbok, peacocks, turkeys, geese..... Only downside is road noise.

As others have stayed this was a great spot for a couple of nights. Last night we were there the host even had a little free concert around the fire.

Be careful though we got there after a couple nights of heavy rain and much of the campsite was flooded.

This place absolutely ruled. we decided to go for a swim too, but when we showed up, there were only 20 minutes left of swim time and the big pool was closed so they let us go to the small pool for free. Showers also got hot real fast ☺️

Very long Road block. We passed in front on everybody by the left lane. They ask for 500 pesos but they finally accept 200. The other road to go to tonala was blocked too…

Plenty of space available at the back of the parking. A little bit noisy as the highway is close but it’s bearable. There was no other van / rv that night but it feels safe.

We weren’t sure what to expect, but there was a wonderfully friendly man named Obed manning the front gate, and he told us to follow the road to the office at the end for camping. They were super welcoming and happy to see us, especially because it was so quiet on a Wednesday. We were the only people there other than staff. 120 Q for two adults/1 child. We parked near the restrooms. Not all toilets flushed and bathroom sinks didn’t have water. But the showers did have cold water, which was so welcomed given the intense heat. There’s also a covered area with a sink for dishes. We weren’t able to find a water spigot to fill our Lifesaver. Rescued a possum who was stuck in a trashcan and listened to the howler monkeys at night. There are a lot of activities and we could’ve done them before 4 p.m., but we were tired after Tikal. Definitely recommend.

Beautiful spot surrounded by wine and olive trees. In the morning some local joggers ran by. Around 9:30 am some friendly park rangers came and told us „no camping“. We left and it was no problem.

Still very good option to stay for the night. We didn't stay because it rained only once a day but the different places up on this road looked nice and clean.

As said before, nice place by the river, quiet. The spot in the forest has a fire pit. We chose the one in front of the river, there's a flat grassy patch.
