Description

This is one of those amazing campgrounds that probably should be paid but it's free! Tons of room, accessible to any vehicle. Fire pits, picnic tables, water, bathrooms are all available. Lots of hiking in the area. There's even a fire tower you can climb up for views of the area. Lots of people with horses so you might get a whiff if you're downwind.

Great free camping in the State Forest with clean restrooms and trash pickup. Water spigots dotted around the area. Complete a permit at the kiosk once you have a site. Horses welcome here. 14 nights maximum stay. The property is very well maintained.
Closes 3rd Monday of October for the winter and opens again the 3rd Monday in May.

Amazed this. campground is free! Clean bathrooms, most sites are level on grass. Had a wonderful quiet night

Very nice place. Lots of grassy spots, very clean. Nice walks in the area...and free. Drinking water and toilet available.

free; self-registration. threaded spigots. poor Verizon signal, but usable. we-boost really helped. 10+ over the air TV with Winegard. note that there is an unspoken, but clear horse area (stables) and non-horse (meadow). BE NICE! if you don't have a horse, park on the other side of the trees/ access "road"/ two track next to the stables. it gets CROWDED. A diesel pusher parked 6' from my open door, his exhaust literally pointed right at my open door, then idled. I moved. don't be that guy. a couple semi-shady types hiding in the corner with their tent and "service" pitbull. by Thursday night all spaces were taken, but space for more. it was too crowded so I left. it is NOT private; always people walking around, looking in your windows, and each morning at 6 or 6:30 loud enough conversation/yelling/ door slamming that woke me up each day. it's great, but free and people crowd close, so it's not....

It’s great - about 22 spots for camping. First-come first serve. Quiet. Easy and free.

What an amazing place !
Very funny with the high tower (perfect for the sundown). Many spots, with fresh water, fire pits, restroom (from 7am to 10 pm) . Like a real camping but FREE !!! Just noises from neighboors, children… like on Classic camping !

This is a great free campground in a state forest recreation area run by the NY Dept of Environmental Conservation. It has established sites with fire rings and tables, water spigots throughout an open field. There are no electric hookups. Some sites have great shade trees. Their is a bath house and picnic area near the fire tower, centrally located. It also horse stables as their are horse trails in the forest. We stayed 3 nights and it was mostly peaceful. However, this seems to be an area that local people come to camp and party…not quiet or respectful. They like the very back corner.

Very nice. Lots of green grass and a nice breeze, no dust! This might just be the nicest free spot I’ve ever been to. I can’t believe they don’t charge for this. I’m going to be staying here about a week before moving on to the Adirondacks.

Stay 2 nights here. Very clean, safe, quiet. Pic-nic tables, firepits.

Got here right about sunset and couldn’t believe the number of horse trailers! Did not realize it was such a popular spot for trail riding. There were probably 8 horse trailers and at least that many others on a Friday night. Had no problems finding a flat spot for the van. Filled out the paper permit. Bathrooms very clean. Enjoyed this spot and will definitely be back.

if you are in the area and need a spot to park for the night, I recommend here. there are bathrooms open for use as well as water. I was a bit reluctant because it had been rainy, but the roads are well maintained. you just pull into an open spot and fill out a permit and you're good to go👍

Open area for camping; many horses and horse sh$t

Hands down one of the best free camp spots we've stayed at this summer! May be noisy on the weekends. Fire tower in the center of the camp! Trails! Clean rest rooms!

Fantastic area, as other have stated I can’t believe it’s free. We stayed 6 nights, close to town (20 minutes or so). Several trails and campsites. Got a bit busy on the weekend but overall a great place. Very clean and well maintained. 1 bar Verizon LTE service

Stayed a night here. Nice bathrooms, only thing is lots of horses here so can smell pretty bad in the morning. Stay further down the grassy hill to be further from them.

as others have said, it's a great site, and doesn't cost anything. we were originally planning to stay at evergreen hill, which is basically a parking lot among some scraggly trees, but a friendly ranger pulled up and recommended this area to us as an alternative. we are very thankful he did. it's 10 times the spot for the same cost (nothing).

I stayed four nights with no issues. Clean restrooms, running water and picnic tables. Very quite ( Except Friday and Saturday). Night sky really beautiful with full of stars..!

Report Check-In

The gates where closed when I arrived, but even so the parking lot was perfectly fine.

Pulled in after dark on a Friday evening and there were still plenty of spots free. Our spot has a spigot, grill and picnic table. Free and easy to check in.

It's open, so come and enjoy this beautiful free spot! Restroom are very good, BBQ, tables to every spot! Fantastic place!

Ahhh Sugar Hill!! Amazing quite frankly. There are easily over 20 spots and a few coming up the main road if you wanted a more private spot. But by the fire tire theres a huuge feild with multiple designated campsites.(great for people who love making friends!) After picking and parking at a spot, you go to the personless kiosk and fill out your permit and youre all good to go! the fire tore was OPEN when we went but they seem to lock it at night for saftey reasons. Each site had a pinic table and fire ring with grate. Between some of the sites theres spickets for water! Theres genuine bathrooms, a big pavilion where I could roller skate, tons of trails, suuuper horse friendly! For as many people there were with horses it really barley smelled, if anything a lil like horse but not like manure. I would definitely come back! P.s. its dog friendly but leashs are mandatory and youre supposed to have proof of rabies vaccination (But no one asked while we were there)

Report Check-In

Unfortunately closed because of Covid-19. But parking lot next to the entrance is open and the alternative parking at the trailhead a bit down the road. Both spots are on here too.

Report Check-In

Both stop gates were closed & locked when I arrived, preventing me from getting to the fire tower. The parking lot (see adjacent posting) was accessible so I stayed there. Adding this comment so people know about the lock. Tower area still accessible by foot. Gonna check it out when I can see around me in the daylight!

beautiful, well maintained, and free! the only issue is that 21 which leads here has a 5 ton weight restriction (which we noticed after we had already been on it for a few miles).

great free spot! picnic tables, fire pits, water, running toilets and sinks with soap and horse stalls. thank you for adding!
