Nice, level area just outside Chama. Has horse corrals and pit toilets. Free. Camping only allowed from July 1 - November 15, unless you are a licensed hunter.

I planned to stay but was delayed. Visited the following day and hiked the trails and wished I'd been able to camp there. Stunning views, cell service and 2 porta johns a nice walk from the parking lot. Lots of divots on gravel and dirt and difficult to find level surface, so proceed carefully. Wonderful birding, bring binoculars. Mountain Bluebird, Western Meadowlark, Crows, Kestrel, Says Phoebe, Black-billed Magpies.
Report Check-InThis place is amazing. In a promaster, drive in no problems. A few horse trailers and horses. Quiet. On 20000 acres of wildlife mgmt preserve. 2/3 hike to an elk viewing area. Views to die for!

pretty busy. I decided to move on and let the horse people have my spot. great location practically in chama.
Report Check-InBoondocked here for one night. Quiet dirt road to the entrance to the wildlife area. Says camping during summer and fall but saw some tents up further in the park. Slept in my car and wasn’t bothered, dead end road very little traffic. Mostly hunters or other boondockers. Beware- high elevation. Very cold.

Report Check-InClosed due to pandemic. The gates are locked, yet some folx we’re back in there. I’m going to chance staying the night outside the gates bc this is my 3rd attempt today to find an open camp spot.
