Description

Community based campsite. N$120pp. Great place at the water's edge. European toilet, fireplace and wood. Hot showers available. Lucas, very friendly guy, is running the place; +264 818184699. Very quiet place, lots of hippos, especially at night grazing in the camp and lots of birdlife too, including fish eagles. Drive towards „Marrow“ campsite and a little further - there it is :)

Very very nice place. Make you a favor and come here ! It’s a local guy who run the campsite (Lucas) and year after year he is improving the place. You are at the river bed with hippo playing in front of you all day. You have wood shelter at every spot (in case of rain or too much sun), the ablution are clean and new. Every spot has a lot a space and privacy.
Still 120 pppn.

Lukas is working hard to make this place even more pleasant to stay. He's now working to make a better street access to the camp and he wants to develop an eco-camp. Price now N$120ppn

My husband and I loved our stay at Lucas' campsite. Quiet place by the river, sunset was amazing, stars reflecting on the water.
Well maintained campsite, by the river, clean ablutions.
Lucas is very friendly and welcomed us with a big smile. We are happy to have supported his beautiful project for his community and we would recommend to anyone enjoying nature and quietness.
Price as of 2024 120pp

Really lovely and calm stay. Would have stayed longer if we could. Lukas is a hard working guy, developing that place every day. Now there is also a roof above the clean ablutions (see last comment :P) and you have a donkey on your camp. Had a big group of hippos just in front of our camp all day long - really nice! Wonderful sunset. Village nearby, but not disturbing or noisy at all. LTE signal with mtc, so really fast but sometimes changing to 3G. 120 NAD pppn and a bundle of firewood 10 NAD. Do not miss it!!

Report Check-In

thank you Lukas for having us! lovely camping on the Kwando river. one shy hippo stayed around all the time we were there. toilets are being renovated and are super awesome even with no roof!

Amazing spots on the Kwando River, 100 km from Katimo Mulilo. Met by Lukas who was very friendly and helpful. Firewood to purchase for 10 ND per bundle. He starts donkey for hot water when you require . Great for fishing. Hippos on your doorstep. Tranquil and quiet and for 100 ND pp is a bargain

Report Check-In

Indeed a very nice camp with 6 sites, all directly at the waterfront - some with little huts for shade (more will be build) and braai area with table. Very clean shared ablution block with two showers and two flush toilets - with enough toilet paper and soap at the sink!. Lucas is a very friendly and helpful care taker who goes the extra mile to make your stay as comfortable as possible and can also organize boat-, fishing or village tours.
New Price from 1.1.2024 on N$ 120ppn and N$ 15 for a bundle of wood. Plan for the future: To build at camp 6 a separate toilet for handicaped people. We can only recommend this place 😃

Report Check-In

Lucas is rightfully proud of his camp. Its in a great position, neat and tidy.
He acts as security, staying on site when there are guests.
He deserves all the support we can give him, be generous, contribute a bit extra.

Great spot for only R100 pppn. Quiet night along the river with a great sunset. Clean ablutions with warm water. Support the locals!

this is such a great campsite!!! Lukas the owner is a local who makes everything possible to makes you feel at home. you camp directly in front of the river, great sunset with the noises of hippos. free firewood, hot shower, very clean ablution. only 100pp which is the cheaper we've found in this area. simple and easy, go for it!

Report Check-In

beautiful quiet campsite. one piece of advice- when you arrive and nobody is around and you can't phone- just hoot! we arrived and settled in and expected Lucas to come some time. the toilet and shower were locked and we were only noticed in the morning, so we had no access to toilet and shower. Lucas apologized and told us we should have hooted as he lives close by. it I a great location and always good to support the locals

Report Check-In

It’s all been said before… Lukas is working away at making this a perfect community campsite for those who don’t want/need power hookups and entertainment on demand.

N$100pppn including wood and hot water. Lukas can also arrange for laundry to be done and for river trips (3hrs - N$500 ish by local lodge boatmen).

Campsite 4 is an absolute cracker!

Report Check-In

Our first night in Namibia after 5 months in Africa could’nt be better.

I wish everywhere we stay could be like this: good price, good people, quiet, nice views,

Congratulations Lucas!

WE LOVED SO MUCH!

We love this place!

Simple but lovely campsite directly at the water. Ablutions with hot shower lovely done. Water at the campsite. Lukas arranged a boat trip with the neighbouring lodge for us. Lovely place, highly recommended.

Report Check-In

What an amazing spot this is on the river Kwando. I have been camping here for 2 weeks now and have enjoyed every minute of my stay with Lucas being very helpful. He has taken me on a guided game drive to both Munduna and Bwabwata Nature Reserves, his knowledge of both parks has helped a lot to see heaps of animals and his general knowledge of animals and tracking was impressive. Lucas and his wife has been struggling ever since covid hit and has been forced to lift his price per person from $60 to $100 but he now offers a hot shower heated by a newly installed hot water donkey. Since arriving I have been blessed with spotting Hippos and crocs almost daily. I would most def recommend staying here even though the price has gone up I believe it's good to help the local community in this way. Lucas is still available on the same number 081 818 4699 and will be adding directional signage to the camp shortly.

Report Check-In

Still the same price $60 p/p. Lucas was very nice, he warned us not to leave the camp after 9 pm because of the hippos roaming around. Unique experience, recommended!

Report Check-In

What a refreshing alternative to those overpriced "wanna-be-luxury lodges-with-bush feeling" along the river!
Lukas is maybe still on the beginning with his camp site but the location directly on the river is great! The whole area is well maintained and he and his wife are very keen not just to give the tourist only a good time but also to improve everything continuesly! The big even places on the river shores offer even enough space for trucks and a great sunset.
They offer also laundry. For N$ 60ppn one gets a perfect bush camp.

Report Check-In

Lucas is warm and welcoming. He’s working to build a campsite that contributes towards the community. The campsites are set right alongside the riverfront, with beautiful views of the Kwando. We spent a few hours watching the birdlife around us, the hippos also made themselves heard, we also saw a croc swim lazily downstream. It’s incredibly peaceful and we were so glad to have stayed. The sunset and stargazing were phenomenal from the campsite. Camping was N$60pppn, although given the great site - it felt like it should’ve been more. However, amenities are fairly basic but meet a campers needs. As indicated, there is a bucket-shower, which Lucas can fill for you. There are western flushing toilets and taps with running water.

Directions to the camp have been mentioned below by ‘Me’ are accurate.

For more reviews see photos as I took some pictures from Lucas’ comments book which may not have made it to IOverlander. Also some nice photos of the campsite.

We stayed for two days and really loved it. As campers we must support community based camps and Kapak is a good example. Lucas was so friendly and attentive. Campsite and new ablutions were neat and tidy. We woke up with the chatter of the go-away birds and went to bed with the hip hop of the hippos. I bought veggies (lettuce, tomatoes, spring onions) from Lucas's nephew and Lucas can also arrange boat trips for game viewing or fishing. You will not be disappointed

Report Check-In

Beautiful, shady and very affordable campsite on the river. Lucas is a friendly and helpful host. Lots of birds and we heard hippos at night . Shared ablution. No running water or electricity but plenty of peace and quiet. ND60pp. Fire wood available for ND10 per small bundle. Definitely worth a visit!

Report Check-In

A very lovely owner, friendly and just nice. Campsites look well kept too, nice location. Came here to take a look as we weren't happy at Nambwa. Unfortunately we couldn't get out of our previous booking so didn't end up staying here. The directions in the previous review are helpful.

Report Check-In

Lucas and Janet have had a little boost from a kind Kiwi and are up and running with concrete floors in the thatched toilet block, a flushing toilet due to a new water tank and septic system and a running bucket type shower which is pretty good!
Lucas also has a new phone, so you can call ahead or to find him:
+264818184699
Just calls and text messages.

Directions: turn off the main road at the sign for Mukolo Camp. Go straight, straight, straight, past the turn off for Mukolo almost to the river, then turn left, you’ll see a fence and sign. Just let yourself in and relax if nobody is around and Lucas can’t be reached on his phone.

This is a lovely village couple trying to better their family and village, please support them, every cent goes into buying the next item they need to build up the site.
Adults $60 pppn, children under 18 free for 2021!

The national park opposite is very good, I’ve seen Lions, Wild Dogs, huge elephant herds etc and had nice game viewing platforms where you can get out and relax. This site is only 10 minutes drive from the entrance. Lucas worked at the lodge in the park for 4 years, so knows the park well, take him as a guide, he’s very good at finding and spotting animals and he doesn’t ask a crazy price.

Report Check-In

Nice view with hippos infront of our campsite. Lukas is busy with building new shower and toilet. We've been here the second time now, enjoying the tranquility, very much recommended!

Report Check-In

Met up with Lukas. What a gentleman. This place actually has a different name. Like everybody described. Clean well maintained. This place is special. Still charging N$ 50 per person. Lukas came to make sure basic ablutions are clean.

Report Check-In

Great community based campsite. Lukas is running this place and continues to build it. There are 3 campsites at the waterfront. Clean European style toilet. No shower yet but he is trying to build this at well. Each site has an fireplace and Lukas can provide wood. It is very quiet. Hippos nearby. 50 N$ pp.

Report Check-In

As described before, basic but real place, nice if you want to support locals, he is starting and building up, is not easy for them to find the money to build, very quiet, very recommended.

Report Check-In

We found this place really easy. You should ask for Lukas like someone said before. There are 3 official camps close to this area, but Lukas is trying to run one that actually helps the local community. He charges 50 namibian dollars per person, really cheap for the amaizing location next to river.
He provides toilet and a place for fire, also sell really cheap firewood.
Its totally safe and you can see the hippos.

Report Check-In

Look for lukas, he has a nice natural spot right in front of the lake and is building a second one. Nice alternative to support local people instead of millionaire foreigners lodges. You can make fire and relax. Has a proper toilet but no running water, you should us the river water to flush it. He is around but never bothered us. We even visit the village close by and play with the kids for hours. 100% recommend! 50 pppn

Report Check-In

Much better option than the former " Kwando swalp" bush camp.
Open area with a beautyfull view of the river, some shade and grassy spots.

Report Check-In

Free spot among the locals.. Lots of crocodiles and hippos.
