Sweet little camping spot 15 miles from I-70. There's a roundabout with a handful of primitive camping plots, a handful of tables and fire pits, and a pit toilet. Free camping can be a challenge in Kansas. This is so much nicer than sleeping at a rest stop!
Why? By checking in after you’ve visited a place you let others know this place is still functional. You can also add or correct any information.
Good, quiet spot. I pulled in fairly late, about 15 or so cars were there already. Probably 3 fire pits were being used and many more to spare. There’s a trail that goes straight to the lake which works for my morning walk. Felt very comfortable, no worries about safety, will use again.
Report Check-InReally quiet and easy to park my Subaru and cargo trailer camper. Only one other car here
Report Check-InStayed here in a 27 ft. Class A towing a jeep. Very cute area. See picture. But very very very popular. Probably over 100 people here over the weekend. Not really set up for RV’s well but we made it work. It is called primitive. No problem for us, but the Army Corp of Engineers Ranger stopped and said RV’s are not allowed because it is ‘primitive’ and we would have to move the next day. Ranger was nice about the whole thing. So…RV’s = no. Vans = ? Tents = for sure
Report Check-InThere are multiple camping spots when you first arrive in the parking area near the pit toilets. Each spot has a very nice picnic table and fire ring with cooking grate. Off of the main parking area there are trails. The trails are narrow and lined with poison ivy but if you can navigate down them without getting into it they lead to about 10 more camping spots all with fire rings and some with tables. Many had benches. They were all tucked into the woods and very private. A few even in the fields down the old road. Gorgeous views of the lake just a short hike down the old road. There is an information board with map near the toilets. I strongly recommend getting a bucket to do your business in though. The smell from the toilets was awful before even opening the door. I was very thankful I had my toilet in my van to use. A few other campers in tents when I was there but they are spaced out and it was very peaceful.
Report Check-InAccurate descriptions! No road noise. Super quiet and it’s Saturday night. Nice mix of quiet campfires and picnics. Everyone has spread out respectfully. Flat grass lawns. Plenty of shade trees. One primitive restroom. Self contained Adventure Van friendly but watch low tree clearance. No hookups. Primitive camp. The sunset is amazing across the fields from entrance. Glad I came down. Will check out lake in morning. Trails too.
Report Check-InAwesome little campsite outside of Lawrence. Nice hike down to the lake as well. Would definitely stay again.
Report Check-InThe park was very peaceful and quiet throughout the night. We were the only campers. There were two cars parked all night and one car/tent. Did not appear that any person was there while we were there. The dumpster had been over used and the pit toilet was messy. It worked well for a quiet night stay in our Van.
Report Check-InThere was only one other (long term) tenter there. It’s a bit far away from the highway but it felt really safe for the area
Report Check-Invery nice place to spend the night. a few other cars when we got here and it was very quiet when we pulled up (at 9:30pm). it was snowing when we got here which was super exciting! looked well maintained and had a cool looking hiking trail on site
Report Check-InSmall campground loop. Well shaded. Fire rings, picnic tables, toilets with running water. Trails with primitive camp spots with fire rings as well. Handicap accessible.
Report Check-InGreat place to stay! Two pit toilets available and also a dumpster. There is also a 4 ish mile hike that goes from this area towards the lake and circles back. This hike has tons of campsites on it if that is more your speed. Some of them are directly on the lake and/or have beautiful lake views.
Report Check-InEasy to get to, parked overnight here. a couple other tents around. very weak Verizon signal, and almost nothing in the morning with the clouds/fog.
Report Check-InPerfect place to camp, either in a van or a tent. Lots of spaces to spread out. You can stay up to 14 consecutive nights there. The Verizon signal is okay, but internet is spotty. The stars make it worth it though!
Report Check-InReally nice. Quiet. Lots of shade trees. Great for tenting, but van camping is pretty sweet too. Keep two wheels on the road, and open the doors onto the grass. Picnic tables. Fire rings. Pit toilets are just fine. AllTrails reviews of the trail to the lake discouraged us. As well as a few people returning that were unable to make it the lake.
Report Check-InStayed in a 21 ft Travato. Nice quiet place. 3 bars ATT. Used a Verizon hotspot for work and did great. As others posted the pit potties were in bad shape. This seems more of a tent camping place but there were several parking spots and we were able to pull the van into our own parking spot not too close to any tents. Would definitely use this place again. Did not get a chance to walk the trails to the lake since we had to work and go.
Report Check-InNice parking and camping spots with a trail down to the lake. There are two bathrooms but both are quite dirty. We stayed here in a van on a night with light snow and were the only people here.
Report Check-InDon’t park on the grass. Dumpster, vault toilets. One bar of AT&T LTE. Great spot for tents.
Report Check-InHas plenty of sites. Do not block the road. It has two bathrooms and very friendly ranger.
Report Check-InOne of the greatest finds! We were going to pay $ at Clinton State Park but then found this gem.
Report Check-InNice spot. the ranger came by to say a quick hello. Parking spots, a pit toilet
, a few scattered fire rings and picnic tables.
great spot as described by the original poster. sleeping here in our van tonight amidst a few others enjoying a campfire or asleep in tents.
