Description

One of the most spectacular campsites on the pacific coast, weather permitting. There are numerous sites with varying degree of view and cover situated on the mountain top directly over the coast. At the top of Nacimiento rd turn right onto the Forrest road (as of 2202-May-25 Nacimiento-Ferguson access is closed, use Los Burros instead), after about 3 miles, where the road forks, turn right and continue for another 2 miles or so. There are many sites throughout the 12 mile drive from hwy1 but the most spectacular are towards the end at the top of the mountain. Give yourself plenty of time to get here as the road in is slow and can be steep in places. Experienced drivers could get in with any car. Some sites have fire rings and tables. It can get quite windy. The GPS is to our favorite site.

ALL FIRE ROADS IN BIG SUR ARE CLOSED INDEFINITELY. Everyone trashed them and started too many fires. Best to not go up to Big Sur at all anymore.

Report Check-In

This place is definitely open, but access is currently only via Los Burros Road and then South Coast Ridge Road (about 15 miles off Hwy 1). Road is passable by any 4x4, but has numerous 12% grade sections and some 14%.

Report Check-In

Road closed. Gate was locked as of 2/17/22

Test Check in to save location. Sort of weird that 40 characters are required to check in.

According to Los Padres National Forest staff, Prewitt Ridge and Los Burros Roads have reopened to dispersed camping as of June 1, 2021. They had been closed due to fire. Nacimiento-Ferguson Rd remains CLOSED.

At Prewitt and Los Burros the signs stating “no overnight camping or parking” have not yet been taken down. Prewitt Ridge Rd looked too gnarly to risk In my Sprinter, recommend 4x4.

Awesome spot to drive up to if you have the opportunity!! It takes a while to drive the 19 or so miles, but it is worth it. Incredible sunrises/sunsets and a wonderful place to appreciate the night sky.

Really nice spot!! I suppose you can make it in any car, but highly recommend 4wd. Final spot is pretty exposed and can be windy. But worth the beautiful view! We stayed here with a rooftop tent. No facilities and totally clean; keep it that way!

This area was pretty legit! I watched a great sunset over the Pacific and a killer sky of stars. Found my own turnoff with no disturbances or noises besides nature. So peaceful!

Memorial Day weekend. Made it late Saturday night, but was able to find a spot on the ridge. High winds, cold front coming in and possible snow tonight. Nice area, and will be back.

Amazing views. Seriously one of the best car accessible camp sites I’ve ever been to. Give plenty of time for the drive as other have said. Clean up after our less considerate friends as well if you can spare the space. There are a few spots to hike down towards HW1 from the ridge that offer vastly different views. A 10/10 must visit in the Big Sur area.

Road sign says 4x4 only, awd are not 4x4. We didn't go.

This is one of the most beautiful places I have ever camped!!! We got in with no problems with our 2500 dodge pro master van - as said in the original post if you are an experienced driver you can get in with any vehicle. Quite a few people there as it was a Friday but didn’t take away from the views at all. We will for sure be coming back here!

Spectacular views! Great ride in on the dirt road with the motorcycle! Took the long way out the next morning for another 25mi of off-road coming out where Willow Creek Rd meets 1. I'll definitely stay here again. So many places to pull over and camp in the 40mi of off-road loop that I covered.

Epic spot & view of Big Sur, however we didn't stay overnight because it was really hot (July 6) and there were tons of flies. People need to respect these places and either bury their toilet paper or pack it out. We'll be back though. This spot is amazing. Free camping, 14 day stay limit.

The best place we‘ve camped at so far on our road trip down the coast. INCREDIBLE view from atop the mountain. Watched the sunset over the ocean, went to bed to a starry night and woke up above the clouds down in the valley. There are so many spots all the way to the end of the road but almost all the good ones were already taken when we arrived. Get there early to secure your spot and watch the sunset! The dirt road was pretty bumpy – lots of regular cars were up there but we were glad to have an SUV. Wouldn’t recommend for rentals though if you want your security deposit back.

spectacular views all around. road isnt that rough but definitely not suitable for RVs.

One of the best places I have ever camped. Amazing views of the coastline from high atop a coastal mountain. When I was there fog was on the water but not on the mountain so it seemed as I was staying above the clouds. And not to mention the sunset was killer
