Description

Note - now correct coordinates.

Extremely basic camping area adjacent to limestone river (great as swimming pool) and fresh water borehole dam. Campsites are located amongst palm trees or, on request, in sloping green pasture close to river and pools. The campsite is still under construction but ideally located for Hoarusib River Trail. Ablutions are 'rustic' (virtually non-existent) with buckets for refilling the cistern or washing and cattle, goats and passing Himba are likely to wander past and take an interest in visitors. All that aside, at N$50 pppn, this site deserves consideration if only for the enthusiasm and vision of its owner/manager, Mapangrepi Jambiru, and the fact that it is close to the northeastern end of the Hoarusib River 4WD Trail.

Camping is abandoned... still a nice place... lots of Palm tree. We have been here 2010 an it was then not anymore in a good shape. So it's kind of wild camping
we paid 50N$ pppn

Second time this year I’ve camped here, follow the easy to see sign on the road.
It’s not being maintained, no water or facilities due to Carona, but your welcome to stay for free as the family told me, very safe, they live in the area around, however offer at least $50 or as I did the second time donate washed fruit and veggies, those cold apples disappeared super quick! Somebody will come and find you at some point, just relax.

Note: the road between Orupembe and here is very pretty, and graded, but takes ages, high clearance and probably 4x4 only. Leaving Orupembe after lunch means your unlikely to reach Opuwo before dark, so camp here and save the 190pppn in Opuwo that the country lodge charges.

The place is alive! We followed the sign at the main pad and met with a couple of people first who were fetching water from the river. The wife of the campsite manager welcomed us (she didn't speak English, so she showed us the welcome message on a sheet of paper) and charged 50 N$ per person. The manager himself came to greet us the next morning. He is still engaged in further building up the site; right now, they are shopping for a water pump.
In between, we were all alone and everything was quiet and dark.
Exceptional place with lots of domesticated and wild animals: goats, cows, horse, vervet monkeys on the palm trees. Great place to watch the stars without background light. No installations, but we fetched water for washing from the river (low water this time of year).
We really recommend going to this campsite, as - apart from being a lovely and unexpectedly green spot in the dry season - it supports the local communities and encourages them to keep going.

This place doesn’t excist anymore, not as a campsite. You can see it was here before, but now it’s ruined. You can still camp here as a wildspot. One man, so far, came by.

Simple, shady, friendly people around, beautiful oasis in the middle of nowhere. Very cheap at 50 NAD for 2 people (discounted).
