Description

It is almost not possible to drive this road during the wet season, even with our Ford F-350 4x4 truckcamper. Very muddy and slippery, deep tracks. Beautiful views on this road.

10/22 - There is a landslide, so only motorcycles and bikes can go through the road. The landslide seems to be older because the gras is growing there already. Please don't go there with a car or a truck. There is not much space to turn back. But the views are wonderful and there are some nice spots to stay overnight on the road. Don't go there if you don't have a 4x4 campervan because of the big holes all over. High ground clearance is required.

3 June 23. Still impassable by 4x4.

Latest Check-Ins

We tried this road with our r100gs BMW but impossible to finish it. We made to about 10km from the viewpoint but we had to return. To much mud on the last landslide. Impossible to this one with a heavy bike or a car

Report Check-In

This road is definitely still only accessible to motos. There are several large washouts and sinkholes, which were just barely wide enough for a moto to pass. I tried this road going from South-North on 2/8 and was not able to complete it. There was a 1 mile section remaining where solo with a heavy bike I didn’t feel safe giving it a try, after already getting stuck twice. With lighter bikes and more than 1 person, it should be doable on motos.

- I saw no one on this road (the only car I saw was turning around near the El Angel Park entrance)
- If you go, count on being self-reliant to get out
- There was a fair bit of mud, but if it’s been raining it would be even worse.

Road a little tricky in some spots with motorcycles. Lots of landslides. Wasn't the best weather today which didn't help. The last 10 miles into El Angel were fine though.

I wanted to see if the road was still blocked and yup still only motorbikes can get through. If coming from Tulcán the first big slip is here. 0.70084, -77.83786 about 20km from the turn off at Tulcán.

Most of the road is fine but a few kilometer stretch is covered in multiple landslides resulting in muddy single trails. Definitely not possible for a car.
I have a 300cc moto and still struggled a lot getting stuck in nearly knee deep mud.

I can't see how any vehicle can travel this road. I did it on a loaded touring bike and had to walk most of the last 10km to the El Angel reserve. Wonderful scenery, eerie, no-one around but very tough. The road has not been maintained in years

There are still some really muddy patches on this road and I wouldn't recommend without 4x4. I went with my 2WD 4Runner (aka 2Runner) and at one point was perpendicular to the road trying to navigate through. I also got a bit stuck once but managed to get out. It took a little over 2 hours to drive the 35 I'm to get to the Reserva but I eventually made it after some adrenaline-filled driving. Photos of some of the more manageable mud patches. I was too amped up to remember to take photos of the really bad spots.
