Description

5 km hike to the Cerro Guanaco (973m), very steep but the view is gorgeous from above. You have to register at the Alakush restaurant. Be well prepared though: if it has rained and the people say it is muddy, a walking stick (wood or real deal) is absolutely NECESSARY. You will have a super hard time getting through the muddy parts. Waterproof shoes also highly recommended and the weather up the mountain changes quickly (it snowed while the sun was shining in the valley)!!

Very frustrating, they close the trail as soon as they think the conditions aren't perfect: a bit of wind, rain, snow... and only tell you so at 10am on their Instagram feed.

we loved this hike! did it without the hiking poles and it was a challenge, especially with the mud, but also fine for us younglings ;)

Nice hike, it's mostly uphill. Be careful the wind can be very strong and the middlepart is very muddy. Hiking poles recommended, they are very helpful. The view at the top is amazing!

Great hike, steep in parts but mostly straightforward. A great climb in good conditions with awesome views but our trip up was super muddy, both on the forest track right at the top (stick to the right), and through the bog on the plain (ankle deep water in places). Come well prepared!

also i wouldnt camp inside the park, rather outside. TONS of mosquitos bothering us even just getting ready for the trek. bring your repellent if you plan to stay this time of the year

its actually about 11.5km return, incl 900m of elevation. the track is super steep in parts, and theres lots of mud in places (but you are able to cross the passages dry footed if you take care and use the logs and stones), the views are worth every step though. most amazing panorama we had, and weve walked a lot in patagonia. if youre a good walker, 2h up is reasonable, but you need to be used to walking uphill. very windy after the high planes, gusts at top nearly blew us off our feet. might need to keep kids close to you there.
youll also get amazing views if you only walk to the altiplano, incl guanacos - about 1.15h to there for us.
