Description

Direct at the pumice stone field (German: Bimsstein) Campos de Piedra Pomez, Very beautiful area, the road is gravel and sand. Remote, quiet and for free. If you reduce your tyre pressure (which is highly recommended anyway for the very pointy volcanic rock along the way) you will get to the Campo (26 km) in about 1 hour. It can be very windy there with little protection available.

Quiet night here with amazing sky. However when we left in the morning we came across the rangers and they told us it is forbidden to sleep at the parking lot.

Absolutely incredible, this was one of our best spots in 1 year SA! Access only with 4x4 because of the very sandy parts 8km before this spot. Very clean and Nobody else Here. ENJOY ❤️

We made our way from El Peñon, first around the Volcano Carachi and Laguna Carachi Pampa, and arriving at Piedra Pomez camp in the early afternoon. Take care, because at this time the sun gets very hot, and the white stones reflect the sun's rays even more, so it is really hot!
From the Piedra Pomez we return straight to El Penon, but we find this path worse and sandy.

Absolutly beautifull place. Everything is so different here, somethimes you thing you are not are planet earth. This place is something!!! Don,t miss it. Be carefull with the pointy rocks at the last 4 km of the path... If you go during the day, in case you get stuck, sure someone well apear, but go with a someone else car beacuse the road is very hard. We spent a calm night here, no wind, no noisy.

amazing.
need 4x4.
a bit windy in the evening without flying stones.
calmed done at night.
haven't seen the guardaparque for fee.
completed the turn round the volcano for the way back, harsh track but worth it (2h30/3h with a big rig for 35 or 40 km).

Report Check-In

Wow don't miss this place! But you have to go by 4x4 because of some very sandy patches around km 20-25 towards Piedra Pomez.
A guide we met, told us it is not allowed to spent the night. But because we are selfsufficient with our own baño it was no problem. We didn't have to pay to anybody.
If you don't have a 4x4 it is easy to arrange a trip from El Peñon, the small town 35 km from Piedra Pomez.

At this estacionamiento we did run into Guardaparque, which charged us 300 Pesos p.p. Park entrance for foreigners. Easy access to beautiful rock formations from here.
The road from El Penon is easy at this time of the year, there is a „4x4 only sign“ but no 4x4 needed if you stay away from the sandy sidetracks, only a bit rough ripio at times. Very nice scenery, we recommend the trip.

Spent a very quiet night here (with almost no wind when we were there). Beautiful sunset and sunrise the next morning.
But be advised that winds can get super strong depending on the time of the year and we heard from locals that the flying little stones can easily crack a windshield! Always park with front towards south-east we‘ve been advised.

Fantastic, surreal, mindblowing landscape! We stayed two nights here, it is such a cool place. Beautiful sunny weather durng the day, but cold and windy evenings.

Report Check-In

We love this place. We arrived here after 2 days of pure offroading from the south. No other poeples arround. Quiet night and not so windy.

If you are coming along RP43 from or to Antofagasta de la Sierra this is an amazing sidetrip. 4x4 and high clearance is recommended. The path gets rougher the further you go with some soft sand parts. It is about 28km on RP34 (as numbered in OSM maps, but it is not a road just a track) off RP43 and it takes at least one hour but better calculate 90 minutes one way.
