Description

Here we arrived by ferry from Saudi.

On the boat we paid $25 pp for the visa then we had to pay 1000 Egyptian pound ( can be payed in dollars) for something (we don’t know) but all the locals paid it as well.

When we got out of the boat we had to pay another 300 pound for clearance or something. This can only be done in Egyptian pound but they will lead you to a bank.

After that you have to pay 3000 pound for the car import even though we have a CTP.

We did not look any of this things up before so we ended up paying everything. We saw all the other passengers paying for these things so we think it should be legit.

Latest Check-Ins

Be prepared for a long and complicated entry procedure.

As everywhere in Egypt things are poorly organized, there are officials without uniform approaching you and you are being constantly harassed by would-be fixers or other opportunists, who try to extract money from you. This was quite a culture shock for us after Saudi Arabia, where everyone was genuinely helpful and friendly.

They moreover took our kid’s binoculars when we were entering Egypt. Claimed we get them back when we were leaving the country, but gave us a non-existing contact number. Thieves.

Report Check-In

There is an immigration officer on board who stamps your passport. They hold your passport for the duration of the journey. I had a 30 day eVisa. Therefore I could not get the desired 60 days. Not sure if that would have been possible if I had not gotten the eVisa first.
After the ferry docks the doors remain locked for about an hour, until Egypt customs feel it's time to receive their customers. The ferry was scheduled to arrive at 9 pm, but I only rode my motorbike off the ship at around 1;30 am.
The EGP 1000 unloading fee paid on board ( or later at custums, once you have EGP) has been raised to EGP 4000 recnetly.
Then you get approached by a guy on a motorbike who wants EGP 375 (can be paid later) who is basically just guiding you through the port. First stop is where they take a photo of your licence plate. then you get to the customs check. This is where I met my fixer Mahmood. You have to unload your vehicle and put everything through the scanner. Additionaly, I had to open most of my bag for a superficial look at my stuff. Mahmood then took me round the corner to processing the CdP, getting the Egyptian license plate which involved a guy copying chassie and engine number and putting on the local plates (EGP 3000) front (I put that one in the tank bag) and back plates. The carnet cost a tax of USD 100 for something which should cost EGP 3000. (certainly a rip off, the black market rate is 64 at the moment, official rat is a little over 30, check egcurrency.com for black market rates, once in Egypt you need a VPN to access it .
Insurance is EGP 975, small fees and tips here and there, fixer fee EGP 1000, Copies 300, and a couple of smaller fees. and tips.
Anyway, Important is that you establish a USD or Euro exchange rate with your fixer. Although it's about 64 now, I settled after much haggling on 58 (which he tried to re-negotiate after 30 minutes), and in the end I paid the $ 100 for the (carnet) tax, and $200 including a $8 tip over his EGP 1000 fee for a total of $300 to get my bike off the ferry and out of customs.
Btw, the customs officer used 4 (!)pages of my CdP, but only staped the 4th one, so it should be o.k. with the German Automobile club.
I left the port with to have a sunrise coffee with my fixer and settle the bill (the $300 total) at 6 am after 5 hours of nonsensical paperwork.
If you find this report confusing, immerse yourself in the Safaga port temporary import procedures.
The Arabs and Egyptians coming in with Saudi plated SUVs needed just as long, although they speak the language.

We paid 845 SAR (around 210 €) for taxes’s port. 😬

be prepared because on the boat, there is not much to eat or drink because the boat is intended for truckers. there is no shower towel or toilet paper.

it was Mahmoud (Facilitator) who managed everything but it was still complicated and very long (about 10 hours). we contacted him by WhatsApp at +20 106 797 3155 ; he does not speak English well in real life but in writing thanks to Google translation, he manages very well. He is very nice. we made an appointment and he accompanied us from the purchase of tickets, to papers and to customs. we paid LE 11,000 for our motorhome over 7 meters and its driver, LE 5,550 for 3 adults passengers (over 12 years old = adult), LE 1,500 for customs clearance, 1,000 for port taxes, and 1,000 for the Facilitator. Total 20000 LE. the crossing lasts 7 hours and we were only with trucks. it is the slow boat but we have a cabin to sleep because the boat sails at night.

Safaga (Egypt) -> Duba (Saudi)

Next to the port of Safaga, you'll find few agencies selling tickets for Duba. We didn't find any agent speaking English..
So that's the WhatsApp of our agent (but you can probably find or try a better one) : +20 1004908626 / 31.47457°N 35.78177°E

Apparently you don't need or can't really book in advance. You just have to come 1 or 2 days in advance so they can prepare the documents.

We asked at many agencies for the cabin or different options to see the different prices but they all offered the same price, without cabin. (Apparently there are two boats, a direct one but with a lot of cars so it can be long at the customs... And the slow one for trucks. We were in this one, with the trucks drivers.)

We were during high season because of the pilgrimage to Mecca. So maybe, that's why why didn't have choice. The price are also higher.

We paid in total 612 US$ :
1600£ (85$) per person
4500£ (238$) for our mini bus (Mitsubishi l300)
850£ (45$) for the port fees
500£ (26$) for the agency
+ 500 riyals (133$) in Saudi for the port fees.

Then, it took us 3 days to take the boat....Everyday, they told us, finally the boat will start tomorrow... So be patient and come few days before the documents expired.
