Description

A dirt road leaves 97 and heads towards the mountain. There are several good spots along the road. It continues up to some train tracks and continues towards the base of the mountain. A few trains did pass in the night so you may not want to camp too close. Great views of mountain and valley. The GPS pin shows the spot we chose, but there are many others that are closer and easier to access. Snow on the ground during our visit, may not be accessible after big falls.

Beautiful view of Mount Shasta. Quiet with a occasional train traffic (not disturbing). Shaded in the forest. Access via sandy dirt road. Level site.

Report Check-In

This is a burned down forest. Lots of dead trees, but not unsafe. There is a big yellow sign at the beginning of the road warning about the dead trees. The first site you come across has an abandoned RV that has been spray painted and shot up. We kept going, and found a great site just a little ways up the road. It had a fire ring and where we put our tent was pretty sandy, so easy to put stakes in. The next morning we had a beautiful view of the sunrise besides Mt. Shasta. There were a few cars that came up the road up until complete darkness. Once it got dark, it was very quiet and secluded. Great place to camp!

**UPDATE!!! There’s a big yellow sign at the beginning of the road: Don’t ignore it! We spent the night there, but in the morning a local came to talk to us. This area is highly unsafe. It burnt last year so the risks of fallen trees are pretty high. Plus in case of rain in the area, the nearby creek can overflow and create a flash flood. The road will turn into a river and wash everything out, including your vehicle.** Don’t go to the GPS coordinates, there’s nothing there and the road gets nasty past a certain point (at least with my AWD Ford Transit) especially if rain is in the forecast. We parked on the left side of the road, sliding door facing Mount Shasta! Super quiet, only a couple cars passing. Good AT&T cell reception. Please keep it clean and enjoy!!

Great spot! There are a lot of pull offs on this dirt road and a lot of them are flat. I’m a solo female traveler and felt very safe the whole afternoon/night/morning. Awesome spot for a beautiful sunset :) Very quiet even though I parked only 3/4 of a mile from the highway.

Hope you enjoy your time here!

The cords are a little off. We saw spots either too close to the road for our liking or too close to the train tracks. But we picked the train tracks. None came in between 1030pm and 430am

Report Check-In

Lots of open spots off FR42N15 with clear views of mt Shasta, especially since forest fire burned most of this area last year.

I checked out other iOverlander wild camps to the north off bolam road but preferred this area since it’s flatter w more level spots and unobstructed views. Don’t camp here if you don’t like looking at burned trees or being “exposed” to sun and wind (I preferred it for charging solar).

3 bars Verizon lte similar to much of the area.

incredible sunset views a lot of roads are really rough or washed out - almost got stuck looking for a ‘good’ spot ending up camping closer to the road for a night

Report Check-In

Visited this area heading south, as of right now this area is currently a burn zone, filled with bullets, bones, ash and trash. Locals have created a gun range, shooting at all hours of the day and night. This is a picture of my dog enjoying a bear claw (not the pastry). Stayed here, bc the cell service was good for work on sprint, ATT and Verizon and the unburned camping area closer to Mt Shasta was higher in elevation and snowy.

This entire area burned in the Lava fire in 2021.

Dirt road off Hwy was easy to spot. We picked one of the early turnouts so the Hwy was still in sight. Super quiet night with a train in the distance now and then. Could have easily gone down the road more.
Sunrise on Shasta was magnificent!

I stayed Thursday night- about 9pm people started target practicing (about 1/2 mile from
The main road) then stopped- they started up again around 11pm and went until about 1 am. Seemed like regular target practice at first, then there were some super loud sonic boom stuff going on, kinda freaked me out to be honest.

Forest Road 42N15 is easy enough for my Prius and there is a nice spot about 5 minutes up the road, on the left, with excellent views.
The wind came on on the night but otherwise it is a great area. There are some trash heaps but some look like someone tried to gather it all up and make those areas more livable.

Excellent area to capture Milky Way photos.

Stayed at the god coordinates. Apart from a train in the evening and morning it was pretty quiet. Not much room to turn around, was kinda tight in my 4Runner.

Wonderful spot to spend the night. Amazing view of the Mt Shasta.
No amenities.
The road is gravel but any car can go. It’s fine.

Dirt road located in the Shasta Forrest. I brought a RWD van up here with no problems in the spring. Would probably not head up here with 2WD in any rain/snow as it’s semi sandy scree. You will need high clearance on your vehicle as there are a free exposed rocks. There are many forks in the road and from what I’ve explored on my bike there are plenty of spots to park and tent as well as flat spots to car camp. It was quiet minus a few passing trains in the night. Woke up to incredible views of Shasta and the sound of birds. T-mobile/Sprint Friendly.

Turn east off of 97 onto 42N15 there are a bunch of good places for smaller RVs and tents. Not much for big rigs that we saw. Very private. Amaaaaazing views. Unfortunately there were garbage piles around the roads here. Don’t let that stop you from staying here though!
Our Promaster did good on the roads.
Stayed 3 nights and would definitely stay again!

Report Check-In

About a half mile up the road there are a couple level spots. Probably more further up. I went a mile or so but it was pretty rocky and didn’t want to drive too much further. You shouldn’t need 4wd or high clearance but it’s just a bumpy ride.

Report Check-In

I’d suggest not going all the way to where this spot is pinned. It creates a challenge and the rocky road isn’t the best in many spots. Just find a place you like and chill. My spot has a great view down the valley to one side with a killer sunset last night and a great view of a cloud to the other side blocking Shasta. Luckily, the cloud did break last night and I caught a brief view of the summit at sundown. That was a special moment!

Report Check-In

We ended up following the GPS coordinates to a dead end, not a great place to camp in a pop top camper. No turn around. Ended up finding a spot closer to the main road.

Report Check-In

Many places to camp along the forest road. About a mile in, you reach the railroad tracks. 3-4 trains go through each night and they can be loud. Stay closer to the main road to avoid being awaken by the trains.
Beautiful views

Stayed here for one night perfect little spot for campers or tent. I didn't hear any noise at all. Beautiful view of snow covered mountains all around us when we woke up.

We stopped here on our way home to Bend. nice flat spot and beautiful views of Shasta. Far enough from the road to avoid road noise and didn't here any trains.
