Description

Amazing place. At almost 2.000 meters you have those beautiful landscapes. Mountains, two lakes, horses, nice people...
But we need to say that the road to come is difficult. Specially the last 10 kilometers, after Bangem. Possible with a 4x4. In rainy season : impossible, too muddy.
normally, there is an entrance fee but we dont know how much because nobody was here!!! ;-)

Amazing place to visit.
The guy said there are new prices since this year. We paid the old prices because he couldn’t show the new price list. This was the ‘old’ price list:
Per person: 2500
Camera: 2000
Drone: 5000
Children: a bit cheaper, can’t remember.

Indeed a great place to visit. It didn't rain a lot, so still very doable although rough with a high clearance 4x4.

The lakes are absolutely amazing! You can do a hike and sleep there as well if you skip going past the police ;).

The fees are 2,500 per person and 2,000 once for camera fees. You can fly your drone, we asked permission, no problem. If you want to sleep they ask 1,000 p.p additionally. They have a caretaker now Mr. Saleh that registers you in the book. You pay your fees with him or in the village.

We registered with the police, they did appreciate. I wouldn't have done so in hindsight as they didn't give us permisson to camp up the lake. If you want to come here and sleep contact Mr. Sone the tourism guide in the area working for the community: 675096845

The people in the area are really friendly and most speak good English.

Update. When we got back to the police they said they really cannot guarantee our safety up at the lakes. He mentioned a security incident 'in the next' village. But the village he mentioned is really quite far away. I still believe the community up at the mountain will make sure you are protected. I would have loved to camp there.

Gorgeous place. A huge plateau inside a crater, with small villages around and farm animals... The landscape is stunning. My english is too poor to describe it but its a crazy place. Probably the most beautiful site we have seen so far in Africa, following the west road.
In dry season, the piste is no problem with a proper 4x4. Last 3 km are very steep, with a lot of zigzags. In wet season, well... let say it could be doable do drive up there but I would be concerned about going back down in one piece. Its only dirt and that would be a lot of mud.

Safety issue : due to civil war its no longer possible to sleep on top. We have been stopped (quite agressively) at the checkpoint in Bangem and we had to go ask permission to go up as tourists at the police station in the village. The guy in charge, really friendly by the way, made it clear that there was no way he will let us sleep there. Its a shame but thats life.

We didnt pay any fee to enter the park, as the chief of police told us we didnt have to pay anything because of safety issues in the region BUT : there was a guy (he was completely drunk) up there at the lakes how asked us to write our names and nationalitys in a book. That person asked us to pay but we just told him we had the authorization from the police to come here and he left us alone quite quickly...

From Bangem, it´s a 1 h drive to the top in dry season. From Melong to Bangem, road is bad. Its at list 1h30/2h. Military guys told us to go back the same way we came, the road south wasnt safe enough. We slept at the police station. Guys are very friendly.

An highligt in Cameroon for sure.

Update : the next day, we left Bangem and we got stopped by police at the checkpoint again. One guy, an official from town, told us we had to pay for the National Park. Well, we argued that nobody told us we had to pay before we actually went up so it was rude from him to ask us money after we already been there. There is also no sign of any sort on the way, the place is not safe, the road is garbage, and the guy up there was so drunk we couldnt talk to him... After 10 minutes, they let us go. So we still dont know how much the fee is.
Big mess but worth it I guess.
