Kazakhstan
We watched the launch of a Soyuz rocket from this hilltop. We could see the actual lift-off from here and the whole trajectory. Check the epic picture of it
Launchpad 45/1 and 45/2 is in plain sight (12km away, 45.94279°N, 63.65713°E).
Launchpad 31/6, from where the Soyuz rockets are launched, is visible (19km away, 45.99459°, 63.56901° E).
Camping: There is a big sandpit next to the hill. You can camp totally out of sight and out of the wind. We saw nobody in 24 hours.
The way: From the highway take the dirtroad at 45.74544N, 63.63429E. Turn right on a smaller track at 45.76819° N, 63.62928° E. The track turns left (north) under the electricity poles at 45.77190° N, 63.63596° E. Follow north for 7km. High clearance recommended. But many tracks to choose from.
Note: There is no fence, nor sign where the border of the Cosmodrome begins. You could keep driving further north but remember that this is Russian territory and a restricted area. You don't want to mess with that ;)
Why? By checking in after you’ve visited a place you let others know this place is still functional. You can also add or correct any information.
Bit far from the launchpad but you simply can't get closer as this already borders the red zone. Still an awesome experience to see a rocket launch. Good sand pit to camp out of the wind too.
