Description

This place was AMAZING! Our first night in Zacatecas we stayed at La Bufa, which was nice but you're parked in a parking lot there. So we decided to drive up to the cell towers across the city. There's a lookout up here called Cerra de la Virgen. The road up is cobblestone and narrow (very thin, one lane - if you run into someone on the way up or down do your best to pull over as far as you can, wide rigs might not be able to get over far enough). It is absolutely doable in a 2wd vehicle even with low clearance. Small cars can make it up here. Longer or wider rigs not so much. Vans and truck campers might be the widest that'll fit.
The view up here is amazing. Drive around the network of roads and find yourself your very own perfect spot. Some places require higher clearance to get into to, but there's lots of spots for lower clearance vehicles. We were quite alone up here after the sun set and felt very safe. In the morning we could hear a few vehicles driving around, but didn't see anyone. The locals we passed on the way up only smiled and waved.
Enjoy! Pack in and out!

It’s not safe at the moment. We were turned away by police who are guarding the satellites at the top from being damaged by local cartel in the night. They also searched our camper claiming we were carrying.

!!WARNING!!
we drove to the top of the mountain at 4.30 to be met by cops and undercover cops. they searched our camper accusing us of carrying drugs but then finally let us go telling us to leave the area as they are "working" up here tonight. On the way down we had to squeeze past another 3 police vehicles with cops fully armed on their way to the summit

I have since found a local news article that explains the local cartel have been dismantling the satelites at the top of this summit. Treat the area with caution. We headed over to Tirolesa view point where its super safe to park up and has its own police security.

Really great spot, whichever location you use. There are quite a few side roads once you get up the mountain a bit that you can use to find a spot.

We ended up staying right off the road, however. We wished we had just gone down one of the side roads because it's a surprisingly popular spot!

Nobody bothered us, but lots of walkers and bikers went along. A few cars passed by. No biggie. Nice and cool.

There's cell service. Recommend.
