Description

The Baja Area in the National Grassland is a badland area to drive in with motorized vehicles. There are two options to camp.
1) at the entrance, after crossing the gate, there is a large area to park, where you could camp. easy accessible, with one bigger pothole right at the gate, flat.
2) you can drive in as far as you want, and camp either at one of the hills where a track ends or in a pull off. Or, if you drive beneath the hills, the flat tracks lead along a grassy field and there are some pullouts as well. The soil of the tracks is soft, but we could make it with our 2wd Sprinter. Could get very muddy when wet. The views are great, you can see the badlands in the distance and the hills contain colored layers from orange to purple. It is an area where you can find agate, look at the foot of the slopes.

Latest Check-Ins

Large parking space, a little road noise. Also works when it is wet, be very careful because the mud is extremely slick and sticks to everything.

Report Check-In

Nice views but the mosquitos were really bad. Still recommend this spot.

Report Check-In

Plenty of flat places to camp. Awesome views and great temperature. No signs at the kiosk indicating no camping. Going to stay a couple nights to check out the NP and ride the trails

Report Check-In

As described, it was raining so we just parked near the entrance . Very quiet and amazing view of the grass land.

Report Check-In

Good level spot with space for many RVs. Road is fairly good for our sprinter class C (couple of bumps but dry). Followed fence to the trees. Spent one night. Was quiet and windy. Saw a couple of véhicules and atv, but didn't bother us.

Report Check-In

Nice spot, beautiful views, very quiet. Only saw two other campers Friday night of memorial weekend. Thunderstorm rolled in late, and easily could have gotten stuck in white mud. Recommend 4*4 and stick to the grass. Also... nerve wracking windy overnight.

Report Check-In

Chill spot to camp. We showed up late and just followed the fence until we found a few trees and posted up for the night. Some mosquitoes so be prepared for that. Coyote howls and frogs or crickets overnight and lots of birds in the morning!

Report Check-In

Amazing place to camp. We arrived just in time for a thunderstorm to roll through. Excellent views had the whole area to ourselves. Seen a coyote run through about 100 yards from our camp. Definitely wouldn’t camp if it was raining a lot.

Report Check-In

beautifull and highly recommended. at this time of the year it is very dry and there were no other people around. The only ones at the world!

Report Check-In

As described peaceful wide open area conveniently located within view of Badlands and right down the street from Wagon Wheel bar (highly recommend for drink after Badlands). No one else here compared to massive crowd at Northside area. Couple bars ATT, no services

Report Check-In

Free off road vehicle area, personally I prefer this to the bookdocking area south of Wall. Stunning views on this side of the park as well but no neighbors. It is dry with no rain in the forecast so we were ok driving back in further and we had no trouble leveling our 40 ft. super C. Two bars cell service and 4G LTE on AT&T.

Report Check-In

Large area with plenty of space to park both near the road and further back

Report Check-In

Still open! Careful though if it announces any rain don’t get too far in as the soil gets super muddy and there’s 99% chances you’ll get stuck unless you have a 4x4. But sooooo beautiful it’s worth it just look at the pictures!

Report Check-In

Exactly as described. Beautiful views and very secluded. 2 bars Verizon.

Report Check-In

Nice and quiet setting. An unforcasted rain came in overnight however. Without 4WD we would not have made it out of our camp spot back to the entrance. Even the entrance parking lot was pretty sloppy. Plenty of room for privacy, just be careful of any rain....

Report Check-In

It rained today and we got in pretty late the entrance scared us a little with our heavy Skoolie so we just parked at the entrance with all the mud to be safe @ kawi_queen_

This spot is roughly only 10min from the visitor center as well and where most of the trails are. Very happy with this area!

This is a MUCH better option than camping up at the boondock spot by the north entrance on the cliff edge. This place offers super fun off roading(it's a designated motorized vehicle area) and you can camp right next to some beautifully colored hills with amazing views of the Badlands NP! I drove around a lot of the area and seemed to have service with Verizon the entire time. Beware though, as other have said, if it's raining or just rained highly recommend not even going further than the sign kiosk at the parking area as soon as you go over the cattle guard. It gets incredibly muddy and this soil retains moisture super well so even if I didn't just rain there will still be some muddy areas. Otherwise 10/10 would recommend, WAY less people, if anyone else at all, better views and more fun!

Report Check-In

Very nice area. No amenities except for the views.

Arrived early in the day and picked our location to enjoy the sunset.

Quiet location with plenty of room for boondocking or overnighting. Recommended…

As it’s Labor Day weekend, we figured this would be a safer bet. We were not disappointed!! Only a few other campers and Baja Area day-users. Plenty of cow patties but only saw a few cattle far off in the distance. Overall, 5⭐️. The views are colorful!
Beware though, it’s super quiet so don’t visit if you like city life.

This is a beautiful area but I made the mistake of camping overnight, solo, when it rained. I was deep in to the area and had to use all my off-road capabilities to exit the area. It is pure clay when wet. Do not drive here if rain is expected.
Otherwise it is very isolated, great for agate hunters and those seeking solitude.

Report Check-In

Great spot! Try to get here before sunset, we arrived after dark and was definitely hard to maneuver around. In the morning we awoke to beautiful views and an abundant amount of rocks and crystals to awe at. We are in a 22ft sprinter and didn’t have any issues, however probably would have been a different story if it had rained.

Report Check-In

We drove in right at dusk and couldn’t see exactly where we were parked, but woke up to a gorgeous view. There is a giant pothole on both sides of the entrance. Our Ram 3500 made it through just fine.

Report Check-In

Exceeded our expectations! Parked up in the hills facing the Badlands cliff wall. beautiful scenery. Colors of rock formations continually changed as dusk approached. Witnessed thunderstorm off to north west. Took like 100 pictures. TWD Ford Transit conversion with high clearance. some of the trails in have deep potholes .. quite rugged. Narrow opening at cattle grate entance.

The most amazing spot i’ve camped.. ever. Feels like a whole other planet to explore! Had a wild sunset and the whole place to myself. Ended up sleeping by the entrance for an easy exit for sunrise the next morning. But definitely recommend spending some time exploring!

Open we arrived at night so we can only comment on what we saw....nothing. Not a good place to be in the wet.

Report Check-In

Stayed here after visiting the badlands. Another van parked later on but that was it. Great secluded area. Some parts had data signal, some others didn’t. It was pretty hot too.

Y'all. What a trip! Such an insanely amazing location! Got to run around the buttes and the colors were insane. Also a beautiful view/silhouette of the park.

There aren't any marked locations, but I recommend going up the hills that run along the fence, to the right when you first get in. Then follow the hills until you get off them, you'll see tracks going to the left/straight and tracks going to the right. We went to the right and followed those until it got sketchy, like couldnt see tracks anymore. The hill right as the tracks stop is where we stayed. Check out the pics, mannn!

Oh! Important to note, we drove our Promaster 1500 there. We absolutely would have gotten stuck if it had been raining much more than it already was (we had a few showers at night) . So not recommended if it's been raining or there is rain in the forecast.

it's amazing that people pay money to stay at the pay camping area a couple miles away and miss the great view and peacefulness of this spot.

Best boondocking location I’ve experienced yet. Absolutely gorgeous and secluded. There was one other camper down at the bottom and we went up through to a higher area to see the sunset and stars. Check out the photos to see more. Highly highly recommend!!
