Description

Campsite in the Green Mountain National Forest near the Somerset Reservoir. Beautiful gravel road drive out to the sites. Perfect remote location in the middle of the woods. Very private and secluded. You really only witness other people driving by in cars (which there were surprisingly a lot of cars driving in August when we went).

There are around 10 campsites of varying sizes on this road. All drive up. Most can fit 2-3 cars at least, some more. This particular location was almost to the end of the road (you'll hit a dead end on this road). Driveable to the reservoir for a nice swim. First come, first served campsites (max 14 day stay I belive). No amenities, although there are bathrooms earlier on in the drive on National Forest 71 road.

DIRECTIONS:
Turn off Route 9, onto National Forest 71 road. Keep going past the small reservoir and follow the river. At the first intersection, keep left onto National Forest 71 (rather than going up Somerset Road to the Somerset Reservoir). Keep going until you hit another intersection, and make a left onto National Forest 86. Keep going and you'll pass various campsites. Campsites are marked with fire pits.

Note: Coordinates might not be absolutely exact here, but they're very close. Download the offline map for this area because there is no signal.

This is a gem of a site! As stated, there were a number of sites along Forest Rd. 83, but the one tagged is located at 42.98656, -72.99008 and was just great. I stayed here for three nights at the end of August 2022.

Like all dispersed sites there are a few negatives, none of which are deal-breakers to me. First off, the entire site is sloped downward, including the best places to pitch your tent (just a bit), and the main tent site is a bit closer to the fire pit than I'd otherwise like, but honestly don't worry about that...after all, you *do* make sure your campfire is out before retiring for the night, RIGHT?

If you have a vehicle that can clear a modest obstacle, the driveway is a bit steep and rocky, but any Jeep or Subaru can handle it. Just be careful. One thing I didn't like is there was a very large and very dead tree right behind the fire ring that if it fell during a storm, could land on your tent. It's still quite sturdy but I've messaged the Forest Service about this nevertheless.

Really nice campsites along FR 71 & 83. Tip for choosing a spot: if rain is in the forecast, choose a spot with high ground. We got lots of rain last night & ALL the sites with no drainage got drowned. People were having to move from tent to car or leave altogether bc of the mud. I lucked out by choosing a spot on high ground with drainage & had no problems. May you be so lucky. It is a beautiful area. No cell service. It is patrolled by Forest Service.

This was a great private campsite. This was our first boondocking with my F350 DRW and AF 1140. I was able to make it all the way down FR 86 with no issues except a few low branches. The directions above worked well, just be sure to continue past the old airfield down to FR 86 for the nice and private campsites.

Great free campsites in the national forest. There are a handful of sites with fire rings and a short hiking trail at the dead end/last site. No Verizon signal. Road is a little rough. 4x4 may be needed if it has rained. Longer than 22 feet may have some trouble. Especially turning around at the end. Lots of biting bugs so bring spray for sure.

Long dirt/gravel road. A bit narrow along the stream in a few spots but not bad overall. Sad to see a gate blocking the last 2.5 miles of the road so I can’t get to the actual location listed here. There are spots scattered in a field but not what I was looking for.
